View Full Version : Compressibility Check Changed in GK 0.27?

Just a quick and simple question and I may be going crazy, actually I am going crazy, but that's beside the point.

I encode to DivX 3.11a and recently switched from GK 0.23 to GK 0.27. I've noticed that when running the compressibility check, it is returning higher values than before.

It used to be that a 55-65% compressibility check would get me good quality. Now i've found that the 55-65% range gets me GREAT quality and 40-50% range gets me the comparable quality to the 55-65% range on 0.23.

My question is this... Was the way that the compressibility check runs and reports changed between these two releases?

This isnt really an issue as i'm just using the lower values for my guesstimating now, but i'm re-encoding a couple of movies now that I know I can get them onto one CD instead of two...

There have been a few minor changes, yes. The compression test now encodes chunks of 14 frames. The fast deinterlace option have also changed. Don't remember what IVTC that 0.23 used, but, either it has been changed from GreedyHMA to Decomb, or it has changed from Decomb 1.x to 4.06, both possibilities will produce a much better output. Same is true for other deinterlacing methods.

Ya know.... I've noticed this (in a small manner) also. I thought mine had something to do with the install of DivX 5.0.3 and then reinstall of 5.0.2 The compression test seemed to operate exactly the same, but after encoding my movie, the result was much better than I anticipated.

Well, in 0.23 it encoded chunks of 14 as well. And all of my sources are FILM, so I never de-interlace or IVTC.... It appears that the numbers are just higher than they should be, if that makes any sense...

I have an idea...

I'm at work right now, but when I get home i'll run a compress check using 0.27, then uninstall it and reinstall 0.23 and re-run the compress check using the same settings... see what the results are...
