View Full Version : SVCD Playback Question

Greetings everyone -
Hopefully I am posting in the correct forum, if not please let me know.
I have been trying very, very hard to read and understand the tutorials and posts I am reading on the forums since I am one of those having a problem with jerky playback of my SVCD's. I am using VCD2SVCD as my DVD ripping program, TMPG as the converting program, and Nero as the burning program. The resultant SVCD will play perfectly on WinDVD on the computer. When I put it in my portable standalone player (US Logic DVD800P), it also looks pretty good but when I hook the standalone player up to my TV, I am getting jerky video and this is especially noticeable in fast action scenes. I have made some home SVCD movies and these play perfectly when using the player hooked up to the TV. Of course, I do not have to run these through VCD2SVCD or TMPG.
My question - does this mean that my standalone player is having a problem playing a ripped SVCD? Will putting a VCD header on a SVCD solve the problem? Or, is this an issue at the VCD2SVCD creation level?
Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions you might have.

Most people would say search the forums, which you should.

I've listed a lot of posts, but this is really where I get my information. The first talks about how different players will react diffrently. The doom9 guide actually has specific suggestions toward the end for how to setup GKnot with DVD2AVI for specific purposes or sources. The next one talks about the settings in CCE , but has the important info about pulldown.exe. The rest talk about pulldown.exe and which might or might not help.
It's most likely an issue with the framerate. Are you doing NTSC? Because I don't know anything about PAL.
The jerky issue is usually caused by an issue with the pulldown progam. It's not that the program's buggy or bad, but getting all the right settings can be a puzzle. That's why I recommend a 5 minute clip for testing before encoding an entire movie. Burn it to CD-RW and make sure it looks good. If it doesn't look good, try going back to the pulldown and using different settings.
Sometimes, although rarely, like in my case, the DVD Player is the cause.
I'd help you with more specifics if I could, but I'd need more information to make decisions since it's all based on your source.
Summary: Just based on the info you've given, I'd say it's the player, but it could be the bitrate's too high for that player, or you need a firmware update, or Pulldown could help it be more compatible with a wider variety of players.

Thank you for getting back to me on this issue. I am doing my videos in NTSC.
I want to thank you for the links - I will certainly review the ones I have not been to yet. I have downloaded and printed out the ITVC tutorial (as well as other posts) and have been trying to understand everything. I do make a small test movie and, based on the results, will modify field operations. I have figured out how to review frames in DVD2AVI and understand what I am looking for as I advance frames.
New to me is your comment about a "pulldown program". I don't think I know what that is. Could you give me more detail on what you mean by "pulldown program".
Again, thank you for responding to my post.

This is Doom9's pulldown.exe tutorial:
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/pulldown.htm
You can actually download the pulldown.exe program from doom9.org, however, this is a command line based program.
You can download a useful GUI for the program.
You'll find the right link here (as well as a turorial for the GUI):
http://www.users.qwest.net/~rolonzos/DVD2SVCD/
The tutorial is step number 8.
I hope this helps.

I'm afraid that you were all in wrong direction - In 95% cases this is not due to "pulldown".
In the last few monthes there are many threads about such problem. I've made a lot of answers - search it.
