how to deal with ntsc? - new to me, need short intro, please.

hi all,

i got a very nice dvd - a documentary about directors - and i have no idea how to make an mpeg4-file out of it.

the problem is i live in pal-land (germany) and the movie is ntsc. i never had to deal with ntsc sources before.

the movie contains both video-material (interviews) and movie-scenes.
do i have to do ivtc on all that content or would it have to be applied only to the movie-material?

also: how is it done? i don't have a clue.

to make things even worse, the interviews are 4:3 and the movie-parts vay in theri resolutions. it is not as bad though, because the movie is only 1h long and i can spare the extra bits..

i made this post for two reasons:

first of all, i made aome forum searches and figured, that i certainly would be a pro in ivtc after having read all i found. gathering information from posts here is really work, since one has to colect all the bits and pieces and furthermore all the different opinions. i remember getting into xvid just recently and it took me weeks, but that is something i knew i would need on a daily basis.

but all iwant to do is rip ONE ntsc-dvd!

atom, if you DVD was encoded progressively (in DVD2AVI, if it says FILM or FILM at 95% or above) than apply the FORCE FILM function in DVD2AVI before exporting your D2V. that is most likely the case. otherwise, you have to do IVTC, I reccomend the decomb filter for avisynth.

as for the varying resolutions, if the resolution varies in the actual movie, I would assume that it woul already be letterboxed and the actual resolution of the movie would be constant.

Well, sad thing is that applying IVTC probably will not give good results. Interviews are usually made with video camera.

So, you need to rip it all (complete) at 29.97 fps.

It will playback not so good, and you need deinterlace too.

Smoothdeinterlace is best by my experience. You can try to convert it to 25 fps, if intent to watch on PAL TV, but it's not so simple and result will be not perfect. Some AviSynth script required :-)

Ripping NTSC or PAL is not much different. If you want to watch it on TV only, you don't need even deinterlace.

i figured, that i would have to do ivtc, since 2 (or was it 3?) out of 5 frames were interlaced..

then i figured, that since the movie was only about 1 hour long, ican be lazy and simply copy the dvd as it is at my work.

i guess thats what i will do for now and maybe rip it some other time..
