View Full Version : Where the heck is that codec?

Hi there. Ever since I've installed WMP9 (though I'm not sure that it is to blame for this) I can't seem to use XviD or DivX to encode any of my footage. In VirtualDub (and, AFAIK, in other programs, since I've also tried with Premiere) I can't find any of those two codecs on the codec list to encode. The list I have available goes as follows:
-(Uncompressed RGB)
-Cinepak Codec by Radius
-Intel 4:2:0 Video V2.50
-Intel Indeo(r) Video R3.2
-Intel IYUV codec
-Microsoft H261 Video Codec
-Microsoft H263 Video Codec
-Microsoft RLE
-Microsoft Video1
-Sunplus 32-bit Compressor
-Sunplus 32-bit Compressor
-Sunplus 32-bit Compressor
-Sunplus 32-bit Compressor
-Sunplus 32-bit Compressor
No, that is not a typo. I really have 5 of those Sunplus. I even tried to remove them without success.
Any hints about what is going on? I'd appreciate that!

I suggest a clean installation of windows (or even better, move to a unix or unix-like OS) - and DON'T install that sunny codec ;)
You may edit your registry, win.ini, system.ini so that every link to that "codec" vanishes, but I doubt it's worth the efforts.
You can try to install the xvid binary again as well. Often helps if some codec took over control...

The thing is, I don't know where that codec came from.
But it doesn't really bother me. I'd just like to know how I can make XviD and DivX to appear in that list again (yes, I tried reinstalling them several times with no success). Of course a clean installation of XP is a solution, but I'd like to keep that as a last resource.

I have a very similar problem.
I tried to re-install XviD codecs (several versions), and I can play xvid movies, but the codec just doesn't appear in Virtual Dub.
Search for "drivers32" in my regedit (Win 2K Pro) returns two locations:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32
with many "string values" (I guess it's how it's called) like "aux", "aux1", "aux2", "mixer", "mixer1", etc. Some of the values have dll names as their data.
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\system.ini
there's a string value "drivers32" there with value:
SYS:Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32
None of these seem to match cjaar's explanations.
cjaar, can you explain in more detail please what to delete?

That's right where you want to be - the values you're looking for all start with "vidc.", XviD's entry would be "vidc.xvid".
Now, the problem is that VirtualDub has only ever been reading the first 32 vidc entries (due to some hardcoded limit), so if you've got too many codecs installed (even if some don't show up in VirtualDub, because it can't use them) XviD will drop out of the list since it's starting with "x" and is thus destined to end up at it's end.

Thank you,
Looks like that was not the problem: I have 16 vidc. entries.
There is NO xvid entry.
Do you have any idea what can be wrong?
I just de-installed xvid codec (xvid movies dont play), then installed again (XviD-1.0-Beta2-05122003.exe) and now movies play fine. Did I really install the codec?

Apparently it's a video codec distributed with digital cameras and webcams. They use SunPlus chipsets.
