tmpgenc problem. swan plz look in

hi all
i have a slight problem with tpmgenc
what do i need to change in tpmgenc to allow me to fast forward or rewind through my vcd`s and svcd`s. at the moment if i try to do this the disc stops and returns to the beginning.

This thread belongs in the SVCD authoring forum.

The problem you're having is not related to TMPGEnc, it's got to do with the program you use to author the SVCD, that is, the software that creates the SVCD file system on the CD before burning it to a CD.

Are you using Nero to create your SVCDs?
With the version of Nero I have, 5.5.10.0, when I put one Mpeg-file on the SVCD, it creates a CD where the following happens on my standalone DVD player:
When the file starts playing and I press the "skip forwards" button, the video stops and goes to the DVD players main screen.
When the video is playing and I press "skip backwards", I get a hand sign on the TV screen, meaning "stop-that-you-idiot". :D
Also, on an SVCD burned with Nero, I can only see the time elapsed on the SVCD, not the time remaining.
I can use the fast forward and fast rewind buttons, though. My DVD player does not stop the video then, only when I hit the very start or end of the video. Does yours stop the video if you use FF or RW?

Anyway, Nero is for basic, very basic SVCDs. I am not using it anymore, and I suggest you try VCDEasy which is a very cool freeware program for advanced SVCD and VCD authoring. You can create a basic SVCD with it too, you don't have to use the advanced features if you don't want to (menus, chapters, and so on). But in VCDEasy you can easily control what happens when buttons like "Play", Skip forward", "Skip backwards" and "Return" are pressed on the remote.
You can also set what happens at the end of the video, if it should play again, pause for X amounts of seconds, etc.

thanks for looking in. i hope you had a nice christmas and santa left you everything you wanted, i`ve been asking for a 6ft blonde, long legs and blue eyes for the last 25 years now, i reckon everytime he gets her in the sleigh something goes pear shaped.

getting back to my original question.

yes i will have a look at vcdeasy, its not that importnat but it would be nice to have all the functions working properly.

do you know how to change nero so it will accept 99 min discs, at the moment i am using 80min discs.
the idea being so i can put some of my 90min films on one disc.

have you tried writing to dvd using tmpgenc yet and if so how did you find it. i have changed one of my films over to dvd and my mate is going to connect his dvd writer up on monday, if the results are ok i will go and buy one. i dont expect the results to be fantastic, but if they are decent then that will do me.

I don't now specifically how, but I'm pretty sure it can be done. Nero is a very capable software. Al, the number of minutes the CD holds is not related to the amount of minutes that can be fit on the disc. For example, I'd never put a video longer than 50 minutes on a 80 min/700 MB CD. For SVCD, I rarely put more than 40 minutes worth of video on one CD. What controls the file size on an SVCD (Mpeg-2 encoded to comply with the SVCD standard)is the bitrate on video and audio. So, the less bitrate (and the lower quality you can accept), the more minutes you can fit on one CD.
Besides, 99 min disks are probably a bit shaky to use, I doubt all standalone DVD players can handle them. I would personally stay away from 99 minute discs.

I have encoded video with TMPGENc, using the DVD preset, yes. I have not been able to burn them on a DVD and check that they're 100% DVD compliant, though, as I don't have a DVD writer yet.
