View Full Version : Catch-22 (R1) audio synch problems after re-encoding

Greetings. I'm still a relative newbie, so forgive my ignorance. I've successfully backed up several DVDs to DVDR now, using the various procedures I found on the Doom9 site. Thank you all for your excellent work!

Now I've run into a film that has me beat. I've tried everything I can think of and searched the forums but found nothing that works. The film in question is Catch-22 (R1). Even stripped down to the movie only, with English AC3 audio and English subtitles, it's too big to fit on a DVDR. So I re-encoded it using CCE 2.5, using a procedure that has worked fine for me in the past (Getting the best out of CCE).

I then re-authored the disc using IFOEdit, again using a procedure that has worked fine for me in the past (IFOEdit Basic Guide). The result? Well, first of all, I wasn't able to author with the subtitles, as IFOEdit crashes. So I tried it without the subtitles and at least it doesn't crash IFOEdit. But that's another issue. Second, the chapters don't match the original. But that's a very minor issue that I'll figure out eventually anyway. Third, and this is the big one, the audio synch starts out fine, but by the end of the movie, the audio is very noticably ahead of the video (~ 1 second?). It's very distracting.

Okay, so now I tried a few things. The delay as indicated by the demuxed AC3 filename is -66ms. I tried this value in IFOEdit, but as you are no doubt aware IFOEdit chokes on negative values more than -31 or so. I tried -31, 0 and 66 to no avail. Having read about the IFOEdit delay problem, I also knew that AC3Delay could be used to adjust delay, so I removed two frames (64ms) from the start of the AC3 file. Reauthored with delay of -2 and 0, neither of which made any difference - the problem remained.

I also tried using IFOEdit to remux instead of author, which had the advantage of allowing me to leave the subtitles intact. I tried various settings, but always got the same result: a title set that starts out okay, but degenerates into very jumpy video.

I tried using DVD Maestro and SpruceUp to re-author, with similar results (synch starts out okay, but gets gradually worse throughout the film).

I tried one more thing just to prove a point. I re-authored in IFOEdit using the original demuxed video, and the result was perfect. Unfortunately, the result was also too big to fit on a DVDR, as expected.

It seems that something in the video is getting lost during the re-encoding step. But what? And how can I fix it?
