Problems when viewing XviD in Fullscreen

well .. the topic is kinda iritating, sorry about that and about my bad english...

first my machine:
-Duron 1000MHz
-GeForce2 Ti (drivers 40.xx)
-Win 2k + ServicePack3 + DirectX 8.1
-WindowsMediaPlayer 6.4 (standart player in win2k)

ok, i've got a XviD encode (does not matter which one, they all have this problem.. mabe it's my machine?), when i open them they play fine...
however, when i pause them, switch to another window (IRC for example) and then switch back to the video, and want to continue it takes some time untill the video starts (audio is palying fine)..
an other thing is when i hit ALT+ENTER to view the file in fullscreen it is the same as above or it switches to a greyscale playing .. after hitting ALT+Enter serveral times it gets back to normal ....

these things are nothing big, they are just anoying ... am i the only one with these problems?

Well, your problems with synching after pausing or stopping the video is probably related to the AVI container playing catchup. Don't worry, we've all got this one :)

As for your fullscreen problems, these are slightly more curious. What build of xvid do you have installed? What player do you use for replaying? Have you tried ffdshow?

I have had similar problems but setting my desktop to True Colour(32bit) all was fine. (ATI Radeon) Absolutly no problems. Hope this is the same for you, LLoydBates.

i'm using windows media player 6.4 (the standart windows2000 player)
my XviD Build is from Nic Dated 23/12/02

but i had this problem with every XviD Build ...
the one thing i mentioned concerning the playback .. well, with XviD it is extream .. DivX5 does not has this problem.

my desktop color is @ 32bit (GeForce2 Ti with 40.xx driver and DirectX 8.1)
and ffdshow ... yes i tried one it, i tried about 3 different builds (when a new one came out i switch to it...) but al it did was mess up my system .. i had to reinstall windows and i don't want to try it again ...

ffdshow to mess a system?thats weird.I use it since it came out and never had a problem...Maybe using other progs is taking up valuable resources from your system.If you use mp3 it makes avi also heavier.

my prob with xvid fullscreen,and any other resize,
is that i could not get any xvid to play at different size,
in fullscreen the movie remains at 100%, and screen fills black,
this also after i installed the last nic version,dated 29 january

a nasty problem that will prevent people to use xvid.

Are you able to watch your xvid fullscreen LLoydBates?

Check your drivers, check your media player for the hardware acceleration settings (set them to max.), and you're done usually.

Since only very few people have this problem it's clearly NOT xvid's fault.

i checked and there was nothing to change .. i think it is the player or something wrong in my windows ...

don't get me wrong, i love XviD .. imho it is better than DivX or any other Mpeg4 codec available ...

all i want now is a standalone DVD player with Mpeg4 support :D

The defualt overlay for 41's and up,has the saturation cranked to like 130%.

Its probably not causeing your problems,but try the 30.82's or less.

If your using a GF2,then you shouldnt need anything newer anyway,unless for a specific game.

ok, this i needed to know, really i put hardware acceleration to 0 because else i could not set the screen brightness as each movie needs
and if i go back to max i could not use power strip.
i remember to you that any other codec works fine here....

(many of the very few that tried xvid)

and what about the bugs in fast search??

my friend, really only few people is using xvid cause of that,
every 200 movies that i see, just one is in xvid,
what answer is your? if xvid has a behaviour that other codecs dont have...buy a new computer??

XviD is working correctly. Just because some DShow filters don't behave like some other filters expect them to, it doesn't mean the codec is flawed.

Did you realize that only people having problem wrote on the forums.
A lot of people are happy with Xvid and don't have problem with it.

I find Koepi wery kind in his amswer, all this work from the developers and seeing guys like you who are never happy :(

This are the ways I've solved some playback problems by myself:

1) Allways use latest FFDshow and uncheck "Use XVID" in the Codecs tab.

2) Use the latest Vobsub with "Allways load" option. This will load Vobsub even without subtitles, it's very useful for colorspace conversions when your drivers/hardware can't suport YUY2 or YV12 overlays. It happened to me on two old ATI boards (Rage 128 Pro and Rage Mobility).

3) Allways use the latest drivers. This solved a crash in the latest FFDshow on my Geforce 2 MX.


I hope this becomes useful.
