View Full Version : Will this new system give noticable encode performance?

Currently I'm using the following type of system:

Asus A7V266-E Mobo
Athlon 1800xp
1gig pc2100 ddr
geforce-2mx 32mb

I think those are the important bits of hardware to mention...

I want to move up to a nforce2 mobo but only get pc2700 ddr since that's in my budget for now, and something like an athlon xp2100.

Would this make a considerable difference in my speeds for divx/xvid encodes or should I just stay with an 1800 but keep the nforce2 for dual channel ddr capability in the future?

Or would I need to make a higher jump in processor speed like to a 2400+.

What do you think?

:D

If you want to upgrade the board then by all means do. But I'd leave that gig of 2100 ram in and upgrade the processor to greater degree than the 2100. I have one and it's nice and fast, but your better going up to the newer processors that run on the 333 fsb (like the 2600+). Most mobo's will let you run your processor at a different speed to your ram. Then when you get more cash splash out on the new ram.

I've been looking into the same thing, check out the reviews at www.tomshardware.com on the Nforce2 boards. I've seen reviews where the newer mobos and higher Athelons really work well with encoding.

I have pretty much decided on getting the ASUS A7N8X. I would agree with the previous post about getting a processor that will utilize the front-side bus speed of 333 mhz for a board such as A7N8X.
