Yes. The speed depends most on your CPU.
However, the speed of your RAM may make some difference, but anything over 512 MB is definitely overkill, and 256 is usually fine.

hi!
I have 512mb in my machine and using windows XP, IMHO it is enough, as virtual dub uses 30-40 mb for DivX5 and 130-140 mb for DivX4. I don't have problems regarding memory.
If you want to use other programs beside encoding, it might be of any benefit to you. Furthermore, your OS must support it, win95/98 have definitly problems with more then 512/768 mb.
Another important thing is how much have you to pay for it, if it is cheap, then buy it, otherwise ..

Actually 1GB could even make your computer slower... A lot of processors only cache on the first 512MB of memory. In that case, anything stored above 512MB can never be cached and hence access to it is slower.

With that amount of RAM you should do a registry hack that forces windows to keep the XP system in memory and not paged to disc.

What's the source of this information?

You just disable your virtual memory and you get rid of any paging to disc. I've 512MB and can say that's more than plenty.
Only for a certain type of applications additional memory is really useful. For example, professional image/photo editing and applying all kind of effects on it (such as you can do with Adobe PhotoShop/CorelDraw).

I think I read it in an article on a hardware forum about a year or so back. It probably was in either:
If you can't find it there, I'll try to find you a link.

Even if you give VDub all the RAM it wants, in preferences, It normally only uses @260MB of RAM on my rig. Since I still use WinME(yes, toy operating system, I know), I have Cacheman to limit cache sizes, and Optimizer XP keeping RAM flushed.
I personally believe(biased, you'll see why in a sec)that RAM speed is far more important than quantity overkill. I even have Virtual Memory disabled.
My Rig: Asus P4T533-C mobo w/533FSB. 2.4GHz P4 CPU. 512MB 1066RDRAM.
Leadtek TI4600 GF4. 100GB 7200rpm HD.
Gotta get a whole lot better at scripting .avs files, so I can move up to Avisynth 2.5 and VDubmod. Wanna see what this baby can do with native YUY12.
