Hi all,

A friend of mine considers buying a hardware-based MPEG2-encoder (Canopus DVStorm2 or MVR-1000) and asked me what I think about it. I'm usually using Cinemacraft encoder (software based). I looked around for comparisons on the web, but unfortunately I could only find comparisons using CBR encoding.

Assuming encoding time is not the primary target and the final output would be VBR around 6Mbps (MPEG2), how do CCE and the Canopus compare? I can well imagine hardware-based solutions are superior using CBR, but using VBR, the software encoders have an advantage as they can apply multipasses (I usually use 4 passes).

Thanks, Andy
