I've been using VirtualDub and frameserving the AVI file to TMPGE successfully for some time. On occasion, the VDR file would not get accepted in TMPGE with error message 'cannot open VDR, unrecognizable'. However, if you extract the audio (WAV), then resave the AVI file without sound, you can use the that soundless AVI file for frameserving instead and TMPGE should be able to read the VDR. Input the WAV file and now run it. If this tip have been well known then forgive me. I just want to share my solution.

Does this seem to be mostly on AVI files using VBR audio, or does it seem random, like on all sorts of differet formats?

It appears to be the AVI with VBR audio that gives me problems at times while others with VBR audio work. Go figure.

It is not neccessary to "extract the audio (WAV), then resave the AVI file without sound". Only click "no audio" in audio-menu and frame servering it.

That is true but then you won't be able to retrieve the sound file in TMPGE when you frameserve unless you extract the WAV first.

That's enough to "save wave". "then resave the AVI file without sound" is superfluous!!!
