codec mismatch - need help sorting out

I hope this is the right place to ask:

What I did

I am using dvd2svcd, gknot, vcdeasy, media player classic, zoomplayer, the media core player and I already tested severall other media players. I did also install severall codecs: in fact I don't think there is a single codec that is not installed on this pc. As the programs I listed above do sometimes install codecs too or at least have their own preferences which codec to use I don't know what codec is actually being used.

What I want :

is simply to be able to play every video format I might stumble upon. I think I prefer the windows media player 6.4. But at the moment I can#t play mpeg, or at least not every mpeg I want to play, it seems that a certain codec has registered itsself for playback of mpeg and it can't play this mpeg.

The question :

is there an universal codec which I could register for all video types so I can watch this mpeg? I don't care much about finesse, I just wanna watch movies

here are some options available to solving your problem

1. get media player classic ( http://vobsub.edensrising.com/mpc.php ) which is similar but way better than windowsmediaplayer6.4.
2. Try installing "Fraunhofer video and audio codecs" which can be found in Doom9's download section.
3. use avipreview ( http://www.avipreview.com ) to see if you can at least play a portion of the mpeg.
4. play the mpeg with a dvd video player that has it's dvd decoder that comes with the package, like windvd etc.

3. can't play back the files I mean
4. Powerdvd can't play it either, hangs up

Try to use LightAlloy -
