Metallic sound with WinDVR 1.5 and my BT8x8 card

Hello everybody.

I bought a generic BT8x8 card that came with its own WDM drivers and WinDVR 1.5.

I tried WinDVR and, although the video quality is incredibly good even at full resolution, the sound is metallic.

The fact is, that only the recorded sound is metallic. When watching TV, the sound is ok.

I tried capturing with VirtualDub (both with the proprietary and the BTWinCap drivers), and the sound was ok (but in both cases I captured PCM 48 KHz 16Bit).

I also tried the trial version of WinDVR 2.0, and with it the (recorded) sound was ok.

So, anyone has any idea?

Which preset are you using in WinDVR?
It's been a while since I used it, but as I recall, it compresses the audio to Mpeg Layer II at 224 kbits/s in all presets by default. Try increasing the bitrate on the audio to 384 kbps/s and see if that helps. It worked for me. Also, make sure it's not a playback problem.

What program do you play the files you've captured with? The Mpeg audio playback filters may be poor. Play your file in a different software than you normally do (PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc), see if it makes a difference.

Have you checked the record volume of your line-in? It might be to high. I don't know how the effect caused by this is called, but it sounds metallic, too.
