Hello,

I have Lord of the rings Extended Edition NTSC and PAL.

The thing is that the PAL version has DTS French audio track.

Now I would like to convert the PAL DVD to NTSC, but I saw a lot of threads that it's really a pain.

Now I have 2 ideas, which one is the best?

1- Is there a bit in some .ifo files that tells the DVD player that this title is PAL or NTSC? I could just modify that file and play it on my Player. I don't care losing the bottom or things like that. Also, I know about decrypting and region coding things.

2- Can I use the Video stream from the NTSC one and the Audio from the PAL one? Will it causes some sync problems?

Also, on my modded Xbox with DVDX software all PAL DVD plays correctly on my TV, any explanations?

Thank you.

Pitou!

PAL and NTSC cannot exist on the same disc. A DVD must be authored as one or the other. As for your audio idea, you might be able to tell your authoring software to ignore the embedded AC3 timecode but, while this might help you line up the PAL audio after some tweaking, you'd probably be off on the audio from the NTSC disc. It would definitely take a bit of tweaking on your part to get things to work. That is, if it would work at all. Anyway, it's a better idea than the first because the first just can't happen.

The PAL and NTSC releases are different lengths so you can't use unadjusted streams.

because you cant decode the DTS and reencode it (easily), you will have to rearrange all the other assets to conform to the DTS track, mainly cause the runtimes will be different from NTSC to PAL, and decoding the DTS to change the speed isnt possible unless you want to record the analogue output from a player or software program. (btw, neither powerdvd or windvd use a directshow based DTS decoder, its all propriatery in a DLL)

What about adjusting the framerate of the video to match the length of the DTS track?

By converting the demuxed video stream to avi, passing through virtual dub, changing the framerate (resolution if necessary, re-encoding it and then remuxing the video stream with the previously demuxed audio dts track.

I'll probably have some sync problem, but I'll try to tweak it until I'm satisfied.

Thanks.

Pitou.
