A friend keeps complaining about how small are the subtitles of some DVD's he watches through his TV-out, and he's wondering if there is some player that can scale the subpictures in real time.

He might try using a different software player. Media Player Classic has a nice display of the subtitles and you can use it to watch DVDs.

Try to look at changelog (history) of PowerDVD. I'm not sure but I think I saw in some recent version that PowerDVD can resize the subtitles from DVD in realtime.

Thanks Mtz, but I tried the last PowerDVD 7 version and it doesn't have that option, unfortunately.

Best thing to do would be to rip the subtitles with SubRip and play back the DVD + script with Media Player Classic which lets you display the subtitles as you like.

By 'resize' d'you mean whether you can make the subtitle fonts visible on your monitor appear bigger?

If you do, then vlcPlayer can do this:

File > Open file > Use a subtitle file > Advanced settings > Subtitle options > Relative font size > (choose an option from smaller/small/normal/large/larger)

I would suggest following: use MPC as DVD player and ffdshow as postprocessing/subtitle filter. Find the subtitles in SRT or SUB format and then you can do with them whatever you want.
