If you change the fourcc from xvid to divx, you can playback an xvid with the divx decoder.
Is it possible to use the divx decoder by default for all xvid files ? What do I need to do for this to work ?

The reason for wanting to use the divx decoder is that it has helpful luminosity/contrast/saturation controls.

Hi and welcome to the forums-

There's no need to change the FourCC. You can do those things and a whole lot more with the ffdshow decoder (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Filters/ffdshow-20021213.exe).

thanks,
I will definitely try out ffdshow.

However, I've been using the divX networks divX decoder for some months now and have been happy with it, so I wasn't really looking for a replacement.

From what I understand when you play back a video, the video's fourcc is read and the directshow filter registered for that fourcc with the highest priority will be used. Is it possible for me to specify (somewhere in the registry presumably) that I want to use divxdec.ax instead of xvid.ax for playing back xvid files ?

i was wondering if there are programs which can easily change the FourCC of an XVID file to DIVX..

A friend of mine plays DIVX movies in his PS2 using a freeware DIVX program, and the works just great. The only problem is that it doesn't support xvid right now, but I want to try and see if it will play them back right when using the changed FourCC..

Anybody know of any apps which can do this, without needing gigs of space or anything? If it doesn't exist, wouldn't it be a nice program for someone to code? :P

EDIT - Guy's I'm sorry.. I should have read up a bit first, I just figured out that xvid HAS a FourCC changer coming with the installation!! HAHAHAHA!! Sorry guys :P
