I heard on the radio that Keanu Reeves took a $70 million dollar pay cut so the special effects could be finished. He is my new hero. ;)

Do you mean $70 million or $7 million? i cant believe that keanu was gonna get paid enough that he could afford a $70 million pay cut. and if he was getting paid enough that he could afford that, then Hollywood has lost their minds!!!!!!!!!

The Matrix (and it's sequels) was also filmed mainly in Sydney, AU :)

I haven't heard the story, but there is no way it was $70 million, perhaps $7 million. But if he did that I'm sure it wasn't a gift, he probably got a couple (more) points on the box office.

I'm usually not a big fan of sequels, but I have to admit I will be going to see these movies. I also think it is really cool that WB is taking a risk and releasing both movies just a few months apart. Hopefully, the DVD for the first sequel will hit the streets just before the third one hits theaters. I haven't heard any plans to that effect, but it would make sense to me.

The way I heard it, doing principle shooting for both movies at the same time saved a lot of money. It's the same way with episodic television, second and third units shoot on location or "backlot" with actors not involved with the studio unit. Actors get shuffled around, but the crews stay put, saves a lot on transportation. No doubt the post-production for the third movie has not started yet.

Okay, my interest was piqued, so I went to IMDB on a whim. From here, (http://us.imdb.com/Bio?Reeves,%20Keanu) we can see that Keanu made 10 mil for the first and 15 mil for each sequel.

So, there is no way that he took a 70 million hit when he only made 40 million for the trilogy total. Suddenly the 7 million hit is seeming more reasonable.

Also - consider what the special effects would be like if Keanu donated $70 million to the good cause of finishing them...! Come to think of it, $7 million is then still a boatload of money.

Well, over at Chud.com's boards someone posted this, copied from IMDB
Generous actor Keanu Reeves has sacrificed a massive $38 million to prevent the two new Matrix films being scrapped. The Speed hunk gave up his claim to a cut of the films' ticket sales when producers began fearing the box office would not cover the costs of making the special effects-laden flicks. The gesture is one of the most generous ever in Hollywood and has stunned studio bosses. A Warner Bros. insider says, "The special effects in the new movie are beyond belief - but hugely expensive. There was a real danger the projects would be scrapped until Keanu offered to sign away his cut. He has kissed goodbye to a huge sum of money." Keanu was paid $10 million for the first Matrix movie in 1999 and picked up a further $35 million as his cut of worldwide box office sales.

So it looks like it was alot closer to $70 million than I would have ever though. So, The Edge probably did hear $70 million, since it's a cut of the BO that Keanu gave up it could really be any amount, and in order to build the story it was probably reported as something like "up to $70 million".

There is NO way the studio would "scrap" the matrix sequals due to budget concerns. These sequals are like money in the bank. They could just film Neo taking a dump and, as long as it was in bullet time, it would make $200mil per film. Look at that piece of garbage MIB II, it was absolutely horrible and it pulled almost 200 domestic.

Oooh, you're soo right! :D This reminds me of the comments that Stephen King could publish a phonebook and it would still sell like crazy :) .

Really looking forward to the movies. I think the material is ripe for a trilogy that'll go down in film history. I hope they'll have the courage to delve more into the philosophical questions and the way it's a parable of modern society, in addition to the action. It'd be a shame if this turned into Die Hard-style action blockbuster franchise.

gotta agree with you there... i think that the matrix trilogy will be to our generation what star wars was to our parent's generation. As long as the Wachowski's dont go back and make prequels in 20 years, we'll be okay!
