Well..after two very endlessly seeming weeks my own precious treasures have just arrived all the way from England:

Tv-serie from 80's 'Robin Of Sherwood'

I guess those boxes were also pretty expensive at least from my opinion, but the money really wasn't an issue here :)
It took almost a year after it's release, before I decided to order it. I finally had to admit that they are never going to shore here in Finland.
Fortunately I found out that this 'Play.com' is pretty easy and painless way to order DVD's from abroad since they deliver to your mailbox and prices are even cheaper than in our local store. I guess they can somehow avoid those taxes.

Can you guys recommend any more good experiences ordering DVD's from abroad?

I am just so happy that this DVD-revolution has made also all these older tv-series available again.

And now.. I can't wait to get my hands on all those encoding tools and find out what can be done with these. Almost 10 hours of material to deliver to those different codecs and filters.. ;)

It's always a pleasure to read this kind of enthusiastic post ! Have a good (and long) time with your favourite episodes. Mind you I didn't even know about this 80s version of Robin Hood (maybe it never appeared here in France).
Concerning abroad orders, I also used Play.com once, but I had a lot of problems (DVD got lost on the way). Fortunately, the guys there know how to deal with their customers and sent a replacement for free.
Their prices are ok, their service is good (provided they don't lose your product or ship it to Mars), so I'd say it is quite a good source for ordering hard to find DVDs. I think you can also look at DVDZone2.com, but I don't know how much they charge for shipment though (it is not free like at play.com).

(And welcome to the world of long long nights spent at understanding how DVD work and how to extract audio, video, subtitles, and reauthor the whole stuff ! This is a very exciting hobby to deal with but it WILL eat your time like hours were seconds !)

yes..well actually I have ripped and encoded quite a lot all kind of different materials (tv-captures, vhs, DVD's), but do you guys know that feeling when you have something abowe all other stuff and no matter how many times yo try and how many different settings and codecs you change and you still can't be sure if the quality is good enough.. :)

And this is one of those projects..again.

And like I expected..never in my life I have not seen so much noise in DVD-transfer, but fortunately episodes are progressive and soundtracks have been digially enchanted :)

Gonna take sooooooo long time to try all those de-noisers out there. About 10 hours material to encode..

And about Clannad..in this bonus-disc exists the main music title for those Robin Hood -series 'The Hooded Man'.
Funny to watch this music video and realize how simple it actually is. Couple of men with sun-glasses and moustache and one woman who only signs "Roooobin..The Hooded man!" couple of times in the song.
Although I didn't want to see those men. They all look like Beastie Boys in that 'Sabotage' music video and these guys are serious about themself :)

Valky, I think this is the same series I watched as a kid... I especially remember the music, would love to find a soundtrack in one local store...

Well, that can be helped I think. The soundtrack is from a Scottish band called 'Clannad'. The CD is titled Legend. Take a look at their homepage, there is also an album list:

I think they still exist and produce new music from time to time. I think you can find the CD in your local store.

About the TV series: One of my favourites when I was back at school. Another one was this 'Colt Seavers' stuntman series (don't know the English title) with Lee Majors.

Actually my most favourite DVDs are two concert DVDs. One of Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street-Band and the other Sting from 11/09/2001.

Well the DVD that I just went ahead and bought when I got a DVD player was 'Blues Brothers'. But the DVD I wouldn't be able to live without right now is 'The Abbott And Costello show vol.1', so far it contains the only DVD version of "Who's On First" :) (If anyone finds another version of this routine on DVD, please PM me)

and @tiki4 - yes, Clannad do still exist. If anyone likes Clannad, they should also listen to Enya (the lead singer of Clannad is Maire Brennan. She has many sisters, one of whom is...Enya). Also, Maire Brennan has done some nice solo music as well, which I recommend.

When I was a kid, I saw a movie on TV that was kept in my mind
for a long time, the movie was "John Carpenter's The Thing".

That same movie is now in my room in DVD.

the thing was a very cold movie. i remember covering up while i watched it even though it was quite warm in the room.
it was based on a stephen king book i believe.

I buyed "The Way of the Dragon", "Fist of Fury", "The Big Boss" and "Game of Death" from www.amazon.co.uk.
The good thing about game of death is the bonus DVD. It has previously not showed footage from the real game of death! and many other great extras!

I got the US version of "Enter the Dragon", because it was a bit cheaper and the movie was made in the US anyway, so english was completely sufficient ;)

I also have some Brandon Lee DVDs, I just lack "the crow" and then I'll have a complete "Lee-Collection" ... That would be great!!!

I bought the Bruce Lee box that's available here in France, was cheap and now I know why. What a crap, only French dubbed versions (what a poor dubbing...), absolutely no work was done on the picture, I guess I could have directly moved my old VHS to a VCD for a better result.
Stay away from it pals...
Lucky DJ Bobo, but lucky-lee I'm considering buying these great movies again to get the original versions.

Concerning my "own DVD jewel", that would be the dirty Harry complete box. The music, the 70s atmosphere, the caricatural "good against bad" stuff and everything...
(Well to be honest I could mention at least 10 different most preferred DVD in my list...:D )

metallicas cunning stunts is my favorite i think. 2 discs, diffrent angels on a few songs, extras out the wazoo. ya i think its my fav, i should try to rip that one so i can watch it more. i think ide have to split it up into diffrent live metallica videos after encoding the whole thing.

Yes, I was talking about the New York concert. While the sound is just AC3 5.1 I just love the music of Springsteen (have a look at John Cusack's 'High Fidelity', chapter s.th.: 'The Boss Advice'). The other one from sting was recorded in Toscana and is titled '... all this time', recorded on 11/09. What a concert.

Does anyone know why they often truncate the sound in such concert DVDs. You find DTS for every shitty Hollywood movie (even American Pie 2), but where it really would make sense are concert DVDs and there they often just have AC3 or even worse plain stereo PCM :(

I hope they get the point one day.

Now there is a difference between "what is your favourite DVD" and "what is your favourite movie". SOmetimes your favourite DVD will not contain your favourite movie, but the menus, bonus and so on will make it great. And sometimes, your favourite movie comes on such a pitiful DVD (no remastering, poor audio, no bonus,...) that it's far from being your favourite DVD (need some headache pills right now or can I go on ?)

So, thinking about that, I would state that my absolute fave (both for
DVD and movie reason) is The Exorcist Region 1, with the great documentary that was shot a long time after the movie was released...
and a masterpiece movie that was never approached by any other.

It was based on a old book ('Who goes there', was written before King was even born :D ). There is even a black and white movie from Hawks, watch it and then you'll see from where Cameron etc. got their ideas :) .

The R2 Special edition I have is great, the comments are the most entertaining that I've ever listened to.

Well, IMO, I would rather listen to Lisa Gerard (or DCD) than all the "Enya" family together :) . The LOTR (Jackson's, the soundtrack in Bakshi's version was fantastic, IMO) soundtrack was a huge disappointment. Just like the majority of the casting, sometimes I've wondered am I watching a Armani model convention or a movie. Sigh.

Did you read 'Guards! Guards'? When I read the Dirty Harry hommage I had to laugh so hard that I even cried :) .

I'm most proud of my R1 Criterion DVD "Seven Samurai"... It was very expensive but worth every Pfennig (back then).

Aah, I see I'm in a writing mood, so I'm gonna write at least 10 from the 30 pending e-mails :D .

i think the sound quality has more to do with the recording source then anything they do to put it on a dvd. on a movie everything is recorded and re-recorded to get everything right, a concert is like what you get is what you have and they dont have as much money to play with.
