View Full Version : I made the switch...

to 5.0.2.

Uninstalled 5.0.3 and reinstalled 5.0.2. :)

The supposedly "original 2pass" is not the original 2pass. The filesizes that I got are much bigger from divx encoded in 5.0.2. :(

I made the switch too, i didn't noticed that cause i'm currently doing Xvid test.

But i have another problem because of the swicth, i can't playback my OGM with Divx 5.02 video anymore, sound play well but video doesn't play, i only see the first image of the movie every time.

Isn't that weird ?

Really? I have no problems playback of divx5.0.2 in OGM with the divx5.0.3 decoder.

As for the 2 pass, why don't you use the multipass feature and just do 2 passes with that? Or you could feel special and make three. ;)

Personally, I'm making the switch to DivX5.0.3 from XviD. For a while there, XviD beat out DivX5, which is why I switched in the first place. After doing some tests with the codec, I'll use it (WITHOUT B-FRAMES! (http://mysite.verizon.net/res0xeep/images/b-frames.jpg)) until XviD improves some.

I tested the multipass and the output filesize for an anime (86mb in 2pass 502) is 212mb. I really wouldn't mind the size but when you consider there is no discernable visual difference, I'll stick with 502. :)

I find it strange that you can have such a big difference in filesize, if bitrate is the limiting factor they should be virtually identical. Maybe you have the bitrate set way too high.

No. I'm sure I have the same bitrate.

hmmm There's another slider on top of the birate slider. From memory, it's on the right of the encoding method selector. What is it for? I set it to 16000. maybe that's it. but then again, I have no idea what that setting is for.

Sorry this is a bit off topic, but do you know if they fixed the bug in the decoder that caused a couple random green frames when using divx b-frames and OGM? I hated this bug, and it was one of the biggest reasons why I switched to ffdshow for playback.

Wouldn't know, never dealt with b-frames in OGM files.

It seems to me you might be using bitrates that are too high. When using very high bitrates the codec will reach a point where it doesn't need anymore bitrate and will discard the rest. The difference in filesize may be that 5.0.3 will use more of the bitrate than 5.0.2 for the same video.
If you use lower bitrates (all relative of course) the codec is limited by that and will produce a predictable filesize which would be identical between both versions.

I'm not totally sure about that other bitrate box but it may have something to do with the VBV. For most circumstances you probably don't need worry about it.

if the top slider doesn't have to do anything with VBV, then 503 is still giving me huge filesizes compared to 502.

Heck, the supposedly original 2pass in 503 gave me a filesize of 190mb when the same anime episode encoded in 502 gave me 90mb. :(

AS stated, I used same bitrate for both 503 and 502.

I don't doubt this, but it seems you don't understand what I am saying. What bitrate did you use? In general I don't go over 1500kbps even for a 2cd rip of a movie.

jarthel

hmm well my bitrates are usually 1500+. but the fact is that 503 gives a much larger filesize using the same bitrate.

maybe it's because of the quantizers which is missing in 503.

Like I said before, it's probably that the codec is maxing out, ie. discarding unneeded bitrate. It seems that maybe 5.0.2 peaks before 5.0.3
I can almost guarantee that if you used a bitrate like 700-1000 on a reasonably high res vid that they would have identical filesize.
You might be better off using the 1-pass quality based mode as it seems the majority of your vids are at quantizer 2 anyway. Will save some time on the extra pass.

Then what will I do with my P4 2.9Ghz P4 then? :) The only reason I upgrade is for divx encoding. :D

@jarthel: how long is your anime? If we know the lenght (in seconds) of the anime and the bitrate you set then we can calculate the right filesize and know what version of divx do the rigt job...

I've just made my first real 5.03 encoding (whole movie) and I noticed some junky squares around some moving objects. They are not as noticeable as yours, but they aren't anime either. :)

Sticking with no B-Frames for now then. ;)
