DVD2SVCD 1.1.0 Build C

(I have successfully ripped in the past, this is unique to certain DVD's)
I am trying to back up some of my dvds to SVCD format, using DVD2SVCD. I generally rip only to my hd, so I can test the rip using a software dvd player such as windvd 4 on the ripped vobs prior to the actual 7 hour encoding.
On Harvard Man, the testing on the vobs produces the directors commentary on the movie, no matter what IFO I manually choose on the dvd. Using the autodetect disc button on the Conversion tab also fails. I tried internal routines and vstrip, no dice. I tried checking an alternate Audiotrack but the second of the two checkboxes will not check, and Audio Index drop down shows 1,2,Deselect, none of which actually do anything.
On Bourne Identity, one of the seven VOB's turns out in French. Odd since WinDVD on the original disc does not mess this up.
What is causing this, and is there a(n) (easy) way to fix it? Do I have to manually rip the proper audio track after the dvd2svcd buggy rip?
I searched the forums and the best I could find was a couple of people reassuring the poster that once encoded, the problems would just "go away" regardless of the ripped playback.
