Currently I'm using only lanczos resize, avisynth 2.5, virtualdubmod, divx5enc. I just tried c3d with the moviehq settings but am not sure about the quality results yet. I would also use Msharpen but it is not compatible with YV12 yet so I'm waiting.
In general...If I do a rip with NO filters would not that result be the best since there are no changes made to the movie besides compression??? This comment probably reveals my newbness quite blatently.
If that's not true then are there some well known filters that are good to use for dvd rips alone...there are so many filters out there and the descriptions for them tend to be beyond my understanding at times.
I would appreciate it if anyone could give me an idea of what filters would be good to use for dvd encodes only cause that's all I do.

The quality of DVD material varies so widely that it is impossible to answer your question.
You make a mistake to suppose that there is some filter suite that is always good to run. Your decisions about processing must always be driven by the specific source material you are dealing with.

I am going to provide my thoughts about the tests I made using avscompare (try that), I'd like to thank aquaplanig & TheWEF for this great tool.
- With very "clean" sources like computer graphic animations or high quality animations or maybe some non anime movies which I haven't came across yet, try fluxsmooth(15,10), all other filters had a worse result in my opinion and I compared a lot of them.
- With regular "clean" sources which I think are the most DVD's (I am talking about film tranfers mostly), pixiedust() can achieve some more reduction of noise than fluxsmooth while maintaining some more detail at certain objects. But personally I am going for a chain filter of pixiedust().fluxsmooth(15,10) which looks pretty good and the some smoothing that occur at certain objects will help compressabilitie.
This conclusions were taken by comparing also with the original, and I made some mgnifying to be more precise.
"clean" means that aren't any real clean sources, everyone has noise in my opinion and at least it is what I observed for now.

Your point is well taken Neuron...I guess what I was thinking was that based on many threads I've read...lot's of people are using filters to clean up captures and very obvious messy sources...I apologize for sounding too generic in my request...I didn't expand my line of thinking not just into the fact that dvd's are perfect quality...meaning clean source...BUT that there are other factors such as lighting and motion and so forth. I was just wondering if there are any filters that would be good to apply to all dvd encodes no matter what the differences. For example...seems like many people would say that LanczosResize is one of those filters if doing 2+ cd encodes with high bitrate.
For me I think the problem is that I'm very unsure as to determine WHAT filter applies to what kind of dvd source, to be able to look at a movie and then say..."I'm going to need this one and that one". I'm not real techie so many of the descriptions of the filters sound like jargon to me...in that I'm quite clueless to know whether this one or that one would be better suited for said dvd source.

One question though...using smoothing filters...does it generally mean that the resulting image will be clear of certain objects BUT will end up not looking as sharp as an encode without using a smoothing filter?

Smoothing filters will produce "softer" picture with less detail to aid the comressibility, so answer is yes.

A simple filter that often helps compresability without hurting quality (and sometimes even helping it) is:
mergechroma(blur(1.3))

Man, believe me, "pixiedust().FluxSmooth(15,10)" is really nothing but overfiltering for clean DVD sources :p.

I maintain my affirmations and here are 2 links to one frame being filtered by pixiedust().fluxsmooth(15,10) and the other not being filtered at all. They are 1,3mbytes each bmp's taken from avscompare. The movie is Royal Tenembaums ripped by dvd2svcd internal routines from ntsc dvd source.
