Problems Playing SVCD on a Standalone DVD player

I have read a lot of postings about problems playing SVCD on a stand-alone player and I have tried everything I have read about before making this post.
I copied two of my new DVDs "Reign of Fire" and “Bourne Identity” using DVD2SVCD default settings. The rips went flawlessly and the new SVCDs play wonderfully on the PC using PowerDVD. But the Disks will not even start on my new SVCD compliant Toshiba DVD player. (I get a "Check Disk" Error)
I tried a few different types of Media (TDK, Memorex, Memorex Black), I tried to slow the burn down to 2x. I tried using Deamon Tools to do a virtual CD Copy at slow speeds using Nero and CDcreator. I have also tried playing the disks on Multiple Stand-Alones. (I get a "No Disk" error)

Thanks for any help I can get, Are there any more ideas or options?

It could be a stand alone issue. Toshiba's are not known to be great SVCD players. Have you checked the list at www.vcdhelp.com to see what they say about your player? What is the exact model number of the player?

Try using Nero's SVCD template and burn one of the bbmpeg_muxed.mpg's that way and see if you can play it.
Watch for any errors after Nero has checked the mpg.

What version of Nero are you using? Make sure it's up to date.
Current version is 5.5.10.0. Nero had issues before 5.5.8.?.

Did you try using Nero's image burn and not using Daemon tools? I know exactly the opposite most would tell you to do, but if you already tried that it's time to try another way.

Mark, Thanks for the quick response.

I have Nero 5.5.10 and have tried using it in the "Burn Image" mode at 12x as well as 2x. I have also used it (and CD Creator) to burn a CD Copy from the Daemon Virtual drive at 2x speed. I have not tried the other SVCD mode you mentioned in Nero.

I did not think it was just my player because I have successfully played an vcd created using another program awhile back....I also tried my SVCD in a pretty new JVC DVD player and got the "No Disk" Error.

did you look up your dvd player yet? I bought a dvd player from the store that was advertised to be svcd compliant but it wouldn't play them...after checking vcdhelp, sure enough it said that svcd's were not supported. i immediately boxed my player back up and bought an apex for $50 from walmart :)

JVC's are actually worse at SVCD playing then Toshiba's and they are bad. I would bet money that your player doesn't support SVCD's no matter what it says. Check out that list.
Take a SVCD you made to a store and try it in an APEX, Mintek or Pioneer. These almost always play SVCD's fine.

I have to disagree with markrb here :) My JVC XV-S300BK plays VCD/SVCD/CVD at standard bitrates just fine, no audio synch issues, selectable audio tracks and subs work.

You still haven't said what is the Toshiba model. And what vcdhelp says about the compatabilitie of that model?

Thanks for all the help Guys.

Sorry I had not mentioned all of the info. My Toshiba is a SD-K625. When I checked its compatibility about a week ago, I did not see any information one way or another. Since that time, I have rechecked it and am pissed to find that it is not SVCD compatible as it advertises to be. The JVC I tried all of this on must not be SVCD compatible either. I thought I covered all my bases before posting out here.

The trick with VCD Headers worked on my player though (great Suggestion). Although now I am finding I have problems with "stuttering" of the image and audio.

I am just going to go buy a new DVD player.
Any suggestions on a multidisk Player that does SVCD and DVD+R?

The studdering is probably caused from the high bitrate. Simply, your DVD player cannot handle svcd bitrates even if you tricked it into thinking it was a vcd.

About buying a new player, I would hightly recommend an Apex if you want to get away cheap ($50-$100), as it will play just about everything, including (x)vcd, (x)svcd, dvd+r(w), dvd-r(w), photo cd's, etc. However, my second choice would be a Pioneer, as I have a DVD-343. I haven't had any problems with it except for the fact that it won't play higher bitrates (usually 2500 max). Also it is not a changer, but Pioneers in general do provide very good quality and support for most formats.

I suggest the Pioneer DV-250 at Walmart for $98. It has better pic quality than apex.

RB didn't mean to insult your player.
I just meant as a rule JVC, Sony, Toshiba's and some others have a poor track record when it comes to compatability. Individual models maybe better then others and some companies are getting better.

I picked up a Pioneer DV-C505 and it works like a dream! The stutter from the vcd Header Trick is gone and it plays all of my media. Full DVDs, Stripped DVDs, DVD+Rs, DVD+RW, SVCD and VCD.
