AC3 Filters for TMPGEnc?

Just wondering if there is any filter that will let me encode direct from an AC3 file in TMPGEnc, thus saving having to convert the AC3 file to WAV beforehand...

AC3 is non-standard in VCD and SVCD. I use HeadAC3he to convert to MP2 for my SVCD's. For DVD's I use DVDMaestro and use the AC3 file.

There's no need nowadays for creating a large intermediate WAV file. But I never tried to encode an AVI file containing an AC3 sound track directly in TMPGEnc. If iviaudio.ax doesn't do the job, maybe you're lucky with VFAPI frameserving? Don't know - never tried it that way.

What I usually do is extract the audio using DVD2AVI, then run it through Sound Forge to increase the volume (as you all would know when ripping ac3 sometimes it's a bit quiet).

The main reason why I was asking about direct AC3 input is because I have a VOB plugin for TMPGEnc (it only reads the video though, not audio) so I'm 50% successful of direct inputting a VOB file into TMPGEnc and encdoing straight to (S)VCD.

Maybe if there are any programmers reading this they could maybe think about creating something like this, it could make things a lot quicker.

I think most DVD players are capable to playback DVD video with MPEG1 layer 2 audio. This has nothing to do with MP3 (mpeg1 layer 3).
I make all my DVD's with MP2 audio. Perhaps NTSC DVD players may have problems with this (the DVD standard for NTSC requires one ac3 or a PCM audio track, but for PAL you can use MP2 as well). I always encode in PAL which is the standard here in Sweden.

I've never used sound forge buty find the sound volume on my dvd backups is too low.
Any pointers you could give me would be appreciated.

Just use BeSweet to normalize the audio while processing it to MP2. If you do AC3->WAV->MP2, you'll be throwing some data away. I once asked DSPGuru about this and he told me that.

BeSweet is OK but I still use sound forge for the job. With sound forge you can incresae the volume plus change the sample rate from 48000 to 44100 easily. Then again, I use sound forge for a lot of stuff that is non-movie related, it's just my choice.

There is heaps of ways you can fix up the audio to a movie, so it's up to the individual to find tools that he/she likes to use.
