I have a Phillips DVD+RW-D28 drive (it came with a computer ordered from Dell), and I am new to burning. I have ripped the movie, and used IfoEdit to split to fit on two discs. I have tested to see if the movie will play using IfoEdit and it does. I have done test burns onto DVD+RW discs to see if things will work. My problem is that I tried to burn to a DVD-R disc and the drive said it could not read the blank media information. I think I saw where you can only record with +R/RW discs. Is there anything I can do to get around this limitation? Do I need to download a driver update or something? Please help me because this is getting very frustrating. Thanks for any info.

1) The Phillips DVD+RW-D28 is a DVD+R and DVD+RW only dvd writer, hence you will have to purchase the appropraite media for your drive.
2) There will nevery be a way for you to record to DVD-R media with that drive.

So there is nothing that I can do then? If I purchased DVD-R discs over the internet, could I return those?

One thing you can do is buy a new DVD-R writer, such as pioneer A05, toshiba SD-R5002, sony dru 500a.
Some online stores may refund you purchase, less delivery, and 15% restockign fee. However it's not alegal requirement so I wouldn't expect them to.

Animal,
You are trapped (sorry for the bad joke). '+' and '-' are two different beasts and only dual mode burners like the SOny DRU500a can cope with both kinds.
I'm sorry for your DVD-R bought on the Internet, but I fear you'll have trouble getting a refund since the mistake is on your side. MAybe you could try to go to the place where you bought you burner and see if you can "upgrade" to a dual mode burner able to read - and +, so you wouldn't waste your DVD-R. Depends on the price (I got my SOny for 399 Euros), and depends on how many DVD-Rs you already bought and how much you paid for them. If you've got less than 10 DVD-Rs, I would just try the refund thing (who knows ?) but otherwise try to sell them to a friend. If you ordered 200, I would go for the burner upgrade thing.
Hope this helps.
(If you are in France or Luxemburg, I can buy them back from you, tell me how much).

Sorry, I don't live in Europe, and I think I can return them. Just remember that it is always smart to save your receipt, invoice, and the original packaging until you are absolutely sure you want the product. Hopefully I won't have too much trouble. Can you tell me how much the Sony burner costs? I can't really upgrade since I ordered my computer from Dell back in the summer.

Well, as I wrote it just above your post, I paid 399 Euros (approximately same amount in US$) for the Sony.

You can get the Pioneer A05 for around $239 USD
It burns at 4x on 4X DVD-R media.

Yeah, thanks for the info guys. Do you think those prices might drop a bit in the coming months? I might get another one sometime in the late spring or early summer.

You have a perfectly good burner. Stick with it and get yourself a DVD+RW or DVD+R discs instead. Enjoy burning DVDs right now and worry about which one to get later.. Exactly how much did you spent on those DVD-R discs anyhow?

I was so poor growing up... if I wasn't a boy... I'd have had nothing to play with.

You said you can return them. That's good news. You may also think about exchanging them for DVD+R discs, if the price difference is minimal.
