what type of video?

hi guys,
im trying to encode my first ntsc dvd,ive done loads of pal in the past,my problem is when i load akira into dvd2avi the video mode in preview keeps changing from interlaced to film to progressive.so im confused about ripping it and encoding it in cce.any advice would be wicked.
even if its just a link to another post.

I am also new to this, but bitrate viewer plus the guide might be of some help for it will analyze the movie more intensely and the guide will explain exactly what type the movie is. Hope this can be of some help.

My guess is you have Telecined content; and the Telecine flags are not available from the MPEG-2 stream. Frame-by-frame analysis is warranted.

its strange because the 30+ pal ones i have done i have never seen this before.i wonder if its just a ntsc release thing?

Absolutely. 35mm film is usually 24fps, so the film is sped up 4% for PAL transfers. But, for NTSC, the film is slowed to 23.976, and then 6 frames are added every second. That process is called Telecining. Much more information is available in the tutorial I mentioned.

i ivtc it with tmpgenc and then encoded with cce imported into scenarist and burnt.seems ok.one question is this,i just dragged it into scenarist,i didnt do a pull down,should i have?surely its 24fps or is scenarist fine without poulldown.the dvd i burnt is ok but there is a very slight stutter in scanning scenes.

If your content's framerate is 23.976, and exhibiting this symptom (MPEG-2 flags switching between interlaced and progressive), examine the frames (as per the tutorial) to see if you have interlacing artifacts. If so, deinterlace. You do NOT want to Inverse Telecine again, which would drop the framerate to 18.976.

If your content's framerate is 29.97, examine the frames to confirm Telecining (which is what pulldown.exe will do) or interlacing, and proceed accordingly.
