What's your Min Bitrate when Reencoding DVD using CCE?

Hi,
I've reencoded a couple of DVDs that were too big to fit on one DVDR. I've read lots of opinions here on what the min bitrate should be? I've read 300, 1500, 2000. I've tried them all and can't say I really see a difference. To me the smallest min would be the best (more space for everything else), but maybe I'm missing something. Does having a min at 300 have an adverse effect? I thought maybe it wasted a pass because one pass was done at a ridiculously low bitrate. Any comments?

The only reason to change it from default for SVCD's is if your DVD player cannot handle that low. Some, very rare, players have issues with low bitrates.

is this the place to post this - i look through the threads but couldnt find anywhere else.......ive got dvd2svcd setup to re-encode to go back on to a dvd-r. Now ive said the cd size should be 4600, and the bit rate set at max 8500 min 300 but the pulldown video file is still comming back out way short of the dvd size???? any ideas? heres my config file......

looks like you have max average set to 2300. i can't tell if you have this box checked or not, try posting your logfile. if you do have the max bitrate box checked, this is the reason for your small file.

Right - i take it were in the "bitrate" tab....there is no setting there which one exactly from the left i have 8500, 3000, 1600(greyed off) then 2230......? just out of curiosity have you come across any dvd's that cant be compressed?? just wondered as i have come across a few.....

yes, make sure your max avg is set to some high number ( i just set mine to 9000).

as far as dvd's being compressed - all DVD's can be compressed!! However, some quality will be lost when compressing them. The amount of quality you are willing to sacrifice in order to fit a video onto a certain media (whether it be 1 cd, 2cds, 3cds, DVD, etc) totally depends on you.

Personally I think SVCD's look pretty darn good, but DVD's look better during high action scenes where more bits can be allocated to more complex scenes. And of course Digital audio can't be replaced as opposed to mpeg audio on an svcd :)

i know what youre saying.......but i found that lately tried and tested methods that used to work now dont.....for me anyway, thats why i thought that extra methods were being used to kind of encypt once the video had been ripped out.......another case....jay and silent bob strike back region 1.....when compressed the video seems to change bitrate at extemes twice a second......another thought was the version of cce that im using----i have mine for ages, is there a newer version atall...? thanks for the reply anyway, can i question you morei i have some more questions about cce??

i've been using 2.5 for since i started and have found no reason to upgrade. plus 2.5 is the most stable with dvd2svcd. as for your version, i wouldn't know since you didn't tell me what version you're using :)

right now i think the latest release is 2.66.?? or something to that effect, but I don't think there is much reason to use it.

yeah - my version is 2.50......just out of curiosity, i have another question.....youll have to follow me on this one cos its quite involved. when using dvd2dvdr it will work properly but the video stream is not quite right - the best way to describe it is when the video picture is slow moving you cant see it that much but when it speeds up it kind of strobes - like it cant keep up there must be a setting for it because when you use dvd2svcd which conects to the same encoder the problem is not there......sorry its vague but i cant really describe it any other way......

Compare your ecl files between the two programs and see what is different. Pretty much every setting is saved in that file.
