that worm was REALLY making my connection go slow and making a lot of sites inaccessible. looks like it is pretty much over now, though.

Someone aught to give Microsoft an award or something. I mean Microsoft can't take all the credit. There was a supporting cast of hundreds of thousands of stupid sys-admins. But Microsoft has done the most to make the internet as vulnerable as it is today.

I am being really honest here. Can anyone remember the last time a non-microsoft bug or security hole posed even a remotely similar threat?

Heck yeah. MySQL has its problems. But I would still swear by it. The stuff is industrial strength.

It just really irks me that good God fearing non-Microsoft dependant/using people have to suffer from crappy Microsoft programming and system architechture and or crappy so called certefied MCSE sysadmins.:p

I think it comes down to the philosiphy behind the OS as well. Windows which is written for a target level of a trained chimpanzee is by default open and allows you to do anything you want. It makes it seem more user friendly. But what place does user friendlyness of this nature have on a server? Is it a coincidence that every non-Microsoft OS and server software uses the system of least privelage? The system will not let you do anything untill you propperly identify yourself. Not to say that someone could not do massive tweaking of a Windows install to get the security to the level other OS tend to have out of the box. Not to say someone could not take the time to easily screw up the things you have going for you out of the box on a non-Microsoft system either. Microsoft's philosiphy just does not make sense.
