The Matrix anyone

Hi

I'm experienced with NanDub/DivX5 ripping and have done some 100+. However I've heard The Matrix can be diffucult to rip so I've done a title search on ripping The Martix and read what people have to say: it ranges from total "fear" to complete nonchalance ("ho hum")

no longer seems to exist, I wonder if anyone has it or can point me to it? I'd rather learn from people's mistakes than make more of same.

I just want to do a "simple" rip - no chapters or subs, just the movie from beginning to end with good sound and no "short sequences repeating" every now and then. I'm using a PAL Region 4 DVD.

So far I've used SmartRipper 2.41 on Movie, Angle 1, then ran DVD2AVI 1.76 to get the d2v. When I opened that in GKnot and ran it, the opening seqence included stuff you'd normally only see on a DVD player: Movie box-office and Dolby sequence. Not good. Then the Warner Bros and Village Roadshow animated logos came up a ghastly green colour - that might be normal for this movie but then again...

The initial decrypting seems to be key ... at least according to some.

Have you analyzed the movie with VOBRator.

Sounds like the main title VOB files contain additional informaiton. If you look at each VOB (VTS_XX_1 through the end of the movie) file in VOB rator you should be able to find out the ID's for your unwanted information. (You will recognize the unwanted material when you play them in VOB rator) You can then use IFO edit to strip these unwanted ID's (VOB Extras - Strip VOBID's - Select the movie ID's only, and click strip it - remember to select correct VOB navagational unit pointers and correct original IFO files). You can select create new IFO files, and this can be burned to a DVD if less than 4.3 GB)

IFO edit will rewrite the VOB's with the corresponding IFO files to a new directory in about 20 minutes. You then close IFO edit, re-open IFO edit (I do not know why, but i have always done this) open the VTS_X.IFo file, select Get VTS sectors. Some crunching will happen, ok everything, and you are done. Play the movie in IFO edit, and you should see only the movie play.

You then proceed from there as usual. This works with NTSC - I do not see why it wouldn't work with PAL.

If I am wrong, hopefully someone will fill in the missing info.

I have ripped the movie and watched it last night. Apart from 880 unwanted frames at the beginning of the movie, which was easy to adjust for, there was nothing special required - my fears were unrealised. Found it highly compressible 640x272, 124 kbps MP3 ABR, 75 % 1st pass - good video IMHO for a movie with lots of shadowy smoky scenes.

Thanks for all the detail you gave. Never tried anything like that but it could be useful for the future.

Just what I did, and it works splendidly. I used DVD Decrypter on the main title set.

Has anyone been able to keep the menu features? I tried several times and got "illegal navigation error" while running the result in IfoEdit's DVD player. There must be a trick here, as I have successfully included menus in other movies.

It's a curiosity at this point, since my daughter owns the DVD.

Any thoughts?
