hmm.. the DivX 5.03 properties window has changed very much.. they no longer have the "advanced" tab, with the quant settings and RC settings and all that.. anyone know what this whole "nth pass" thing is all about? and bitrate modulation? I wonder why they only made it DivX 5.03... it seems a lot of new stuff was added.. but I suppose that version numbers never really meant anything anyways.. I mean, take a look at m$'s version schemes..

A new version, the day after I uninstall DivX 5.0.2 for good. LOL

Good, just got both of them, the standard and pro version,
just waiting 1 or 2 days for the key*en :)

concerning spyware components it is exactly as with 5.02...
- do not connect to the internet
- install the codec
- run ad-aware
- wait until it's finished
- set HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\clsid\{21ffb6c0-0da1-11d5-a9d5-00500413153c}\ to the ignore list
- check the rest to be deleted
- one gain_exe can't be deleted...
- restart, and open your divx folder [/programs/divx]
- now, manually delete the last gain.exe - that's it
:D
cheers Sill

I think it is easier to just disable gain with msconfig.

heh, I think I'm going legit and will actually purchase it. Been doing that with a lot of my software lately. Anyone know up to what version number they let you get free upgrades?

The reason you can't delete one gain.exe is because the program is running. Open taskmanager and kill the process called "Gain_trickler" or something like that, and you should be able to delete gain.exe without rebooting.

The Divx 5.02 key*en should work fine methinks. WTC XVID is better

are they talking about warez? it's legal to disable the spyware if you are able to do it..

so can you just run an "nth" pass as many times as you want to? anyone know how many passes you can reach peak quality at?

EDIT: Ignore last message. It appears I have a regged 5.02. Once I uninstalled the registry keys for 5.02 and tried to encode using 5.03 it would not have it. It appears the divx.dll checks for the key etc.

Did anybody compare any rips to older verions or to latest xvids?
Im wondering if it's better..

The decoder is the .ax file. You should just be able to drop that in the system32 folder overwriting the previous version.
Let me know if it works.
let me quote your .inf-file:
DivX5="DivX 5.0.2 Pro Encoder Only"
InfFile="divx50.inf"
UninstallDispName="__ DivX 5.0.2 Pro Video Codec __"
UnInstallPath="Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\DivX5PRO"
MediaClassName="Media Devices"
mfgname="Project DivX 5.0 Pro"
does it matter???
and about the .ax - it isn't bundled, at least I'm to blind to see the .ax :D

OK I did a little bit of tweaking. It's basically an alternate version of the instructions above using the trickler key. Remember to add that key to your ad-aware/spyware exclusions list. It's harmless as only a registry key anyhow.
All you have to do is download this file, extract it, run install.bat from the codecs folder (This registers the playback filter, creates a folder in "c:\program files" called "divx" and copies the relevant files. It does not create the shortcuts in your start menu so you will have to go there if you want to create shortcuts or run the configuration utility and/or player).
Right click the .inf file in the codecs folder and select install.
All done! :)
I believe this is all legal as all you are doing is installing without the nasty adware/spyware crapola. It's not even really a hack. SO I think it's OK to post it here. If not let me know.
@edit: link removed
P.S. sillKotchka the .inf file is only an installer for the codec and regkeys. The fact it says another version does not matter. I should have edited to say 5.03 before posting but oh well. It has no effect on the functionality whatsoever anyhow. It's still 5.03 ;)

did you know that if you can download an "upgrade version" without the ad/spyware of DivX 5.03 legally off of divx.com? but it is really not an upgrade, but rather the full installation... but it assumes that you have fully purchased DivX Pro, as you still need an activation code, etc. to make it work (unless you are upgrading from a registered version of DivX 5.02 pro, in which case it won't bug you again for the activation code).

Just some info for anyone who finds they can't download the adware version. Apparently due to some legal issues in some countries it is temporarily unavailable in those countries. Someone provided me with the link to the google cached download page, first I'd heard of this sort of thing but I'm sure many of you will know what to do as I don't have the link anymore.

why would anyone download the adware gain crap? here's the pro demo:
https://secure.divx.com/downloads/DivXPro503Bundle.exe
and keygens fly everywhere! I know at least 20 sites that offer keygens, and on this thread people are still talking about that stupid method to remove gain with adware. just don't install it.
and about the legal issue: it's illegal to remove gain, if you continue to use divx. so better use the keygen right away, or buy divx if you have scruples.

According to DivX page, Pro is 200k larger even though it presumably doesn't include spyware.
Also, is 5.03 going to grab playback of DivX 3 files? I had patched the 3.11 codec according to Tsunami's instructions (in that famous long thread about preventing later DivX's from playing ver 3 files).
Oh, and can we be quite sure DivX 5.03 doesn't include any "nastyware" ? --(akin to the policeman stuff WMP 9 includes).

I think this is becauase part of the software in the Pro Version is the stuff that checks you are a registered user, and the stuff to activate your software, and all that shiz.

you're wrong. Its illegal to use a registered version of DivX if you do not own a liscense to it. and, the use of a keygen to activate it is also illegal. On the other hand, disabling the spyware that comes with software packages is fully LEGAL. It is their responsibility to make sure that the spyware cannot be removed, or if it can, then the software won't function properly. Even if you can't remove the spyware, you can block any outgoing connections that come from the spyware with a firewall.. surely that isn't illegal..
on a side note: if you had phrased your post in a certain way, something like "To all upgrade users, you can download a full upgrade version of DivX 5.03 PRO here: http://link " then that probably would have been okay...

Just a quick check to see if anyone else had any problems with choppy video (only in Hi-Res Full Screen) after installing. I've got some stuff I encoded literally yesterday that played back fine, and upon upgrading went straight to hell. I'm running an AMD 1700+ /w 1GB of RAM, so I doubt speed is an issue. Haven't messed with any settings in 5.02 or .03. either.

If you have a firewall installed you can just deny gain_xxxx.exe access to the internet. That always worked for me.

no, that's wrong. if you go to the lavasoft forum (the ad-aware spyware removal utility creators) and ask how to use a cracked cd_clint.dll to pretend that cydoor is still installed so that kazaa works, you won't get any help there, because it's illegal. It's the same as if you change the date to use time limited demos. same with divx: you remove gain, but you leave one gain key in the registry to pretend to divx that gain is still installed. that's just as illegal as to change the date to use time limited demos or to use a cracked version of cydoor to continue using kazaa without spyware. There's no difference between pretending that the time limit is not over yet by changing the date or pretending that 3rd party programmes are still installed or pretending that you own a valid serial.
Of course it's the producers' responsibility to ensure that their product can't be cracked to easily. but just as well it's the responsibility of the police to prevent crimes. if they are unable to do so, it doesn't mean that you are allowed to commit crimes.
Spyware actually means lack of free will, because it is often installed without your agreement. but in divx's case you agree to install it. If you remove gain, without removing divx you break the agreement. and since it's illegal anyway, you could just as well use keygens and avoid the whole hassle with spyware.

so that kazaa works, you won't get any help there, because it's illegal Maybe it's because you asked about KaZaA, which is used heavily for illegal purposes. Which may be why you didn't get any help :D Just kidding...
you won't get any help there, because it's illegal Yes, but in this case you're actually modifying the program. Does illegality also apply for the removal of a program?
you remove gain, but you leave one gain key in the registry to pretend to divx that gain is still installed. that's just as illegal as to change the date to use time limited demos or to use a cracked version of cydoor to continue using kazaa without spyware Yeah, probably.

and since it's illegal anyway, you could just as well use keygens and avoid the whole hassle with spyware. And here I was thinking you were trying to prevent illegal license violations. :D

The reason some people can not see the free adware GAIN pro version of DivX 5.03 is because of your location (country). Because of some legal stuff, they have not made the file availiable for download to some countries... It jut means you have to get it from somewhere else or fool the website to think your from US for example (if you the comp skills that requires). Easiest would just be to ask friend to download and send you.
Oh.. and about the legality of removing GAIN from your system: Its probably illegal technically, but its in a very gray area i think. For me atleast, as long as GAIN tries to hide spyware on my machine, wont let me unistall it (even if i uninstal the program it came with), runs large memory eating processes in the background and sends out info to the net i am not informed about... then i will treat it like a virus and kill it.

that's defintivly NOT true!! Little example ;)
- I can download the adware solution with no problem - I can see the link
- but a friend of mine [just two blocks over the street] couldn't see any download possibility - hence couldn't download it
--> that's why it has nothing to do with the country you live in [and nor with the browser/ browsercache] we checked all out but my friend wasn't able to download this app
I don't know any reason for this really strange behaviour
my 2 cents

there are TWO pages:
http://www.divx.com/divx/index.php
is one of them, AND
http://www.divx.com/divx/index1.php
is the other
on the second, there is no adware version offered.. on the first, there is one. for me, when I go to divx.com, it links to the first page. I wonder why they even have a page on their server that doesn't offer the adware version... are they thinking of taking the adware version away?

Maybe because everyone is disabling the adware :(
dTb
28th January 2003, 01:52
I've already posted in this thread the reason why the adware version is not available and Stigma is correct. It is not available to certain countries for legal reasons, this comes straight from Digital56k on the divx forum after he got in touch with dxn hq.
sillKotscha
28th January 2003, 01:57
hmm, did you read what I was posting??? ;)
2 blocks over a street is definitively not another country :D
but who knows, maybe you can explain that to me!!
dTb
28th January 2003, 02:12
I did read what you said sillKotscha and no offence but just because you've discovered some peculiarities with the way it works does not mean it's not true.
I don't really know much about this sort of stuff but from what midiguy has posted it seems they use some method to redirect you to either page depending on where you are.
I can appreciate that some people might not believe me but I'm only going on what I was told when this came up on forums.divx.com last week. After someone brought this up I relised the same was happening for me, Digital56k got in touch with dxn and that's what they told him.

2 blocks over a street is definitively not another country
It depends on where you ISP is located. I'm in Ireland but my ISP main router is based in Amsterdam. But changing the proxy in my web browser i'm in Korea. So even google.ie changes to http://www.google.com/intl/ko/ as it detects your location.
So what Stigma said earlier could very well be true.

... or it could just be a bug in the way divx.com is redirecting some people// so that even if you are in, say, the US, it gives you the wrong page (because of a bug?) just a thought..

I never even imagined that people might have probs with downloading demos. come on, is it your first day on the net? if divx doesn't allow you to download, use an anonymous proxy. anyway, who cares? just get it from some other server, copies are all over the net, go to filemirrors.com and type divx. or just use this link:
