Hello
I've tried a couple of times to rip HFRedOctober - 2' 15" at about 7gb. I end up with a perfect 4.1gb mpeg, and a 6ch ac3 at 443mb. The only trouble is, I'm missing about 30 or 40 minutes of the film.

Does W98 stop dead at 4.1gb? I've got a P3 667mhz with 512mb ram.

I've scoured the forums and guides and haven't found the light.

Thanks guys.

Hi

You're somewhat right. W98 uses the FAT file system which is limited to 4gig. This doesn't happen with Win2000 and WinXP though since these 2 versions can handle both FAT and NTFS systems, and NTFS has practically no file size limitations.
Since I havent ripped dvd's on Win98(Im using WinXP), I'm not quite sure how to go about getting your 7gig movie ripped in its entirety to your hard disk :) ,aside from suggesting you switch to Win2K or XP of course. But there maybe others here who can help you with alternative solutions without dumping Win98?

Make sure you rip the .VOBs sectionally (most rippers have the option to rip the .VOBs in 1024 MB intervals [1 GB]) instead of all at once (IFO ripping to burn a copy). DVDdecrypter's default is the aforementioned. Unless you changed it, it should work fine on Win 98, unless I'm missing something...

Thanks Ardendag
I've tried DVD Dycrypter, and it will rip the entire film, just had trouble after that. I went with a new guide that uses SR, and I guess I'll go back to Dycrpter.

I have a 7.5g hardrive @ 5600rpm and a 40g @ 7200. I'd like to install W2K on the 7.5 and keep W98 on the 40. Has anyone used 2 diff operating systems successfully?

If so, can I run W2K on one drive and store the file on the big drive using W98? Or am I dreaming?

Thanks....

Yesiree. Dual-booting Win98 and Win2K is possible. I used to do it before I completely upgraded to WinXP. For optimal file compatibility though, you'll need to set both to the FAT32 file system so that Win98 can read files created in Win2K.
Here's a useful link you can check for the innards of MS OS dual-booting:

...EDITso that Win98 can read files created in Win2K .

Thanks nfury8 I'll do a little more research and try it.

By default, SmartRipper in Movie mode will take angle 1 of the longest program chain, and carve the resulting .vob files into 1GB chunks. If you're using a different mode, or you've made changes to SmartRipper's defaults, this may be the reason for your problem. A "4.1 GB" .vob stream should be 5 .vob files, plus an .ifo, plus a .txt file. 7GB should be 7 or 8 vobs.

set both to the FAT32 file system so that Win2K can read files created in Win98.

I know that sounded fishy, so I read the guide. It's the other way around...

NTFS files cannot be read from a FAT 32 system (i.e. you can read files made on the NTFS hard drive or partition with windows 2k/xp, but NOT with Windows 9x/ME, NOT the other way around) but FAT 32 files can be read from an NTFS environment.

EDIT: The whole point he wanted an NTFS partition, is so he could have files larger than 4GB (to just create a direct image of his DVD to burn, I assume)

I realized I had it the other way around, and it sounded fishy too, lol. I was about to edit it but you beat me to it. I apologize for the misinformation. Thanks Arden for pointing that out.
