View Full Version : Two Questions. Labels Heating up? Bulk pack vs. Retail media quality

Hi,
I had two quick questions:
1. Everyone talked about not putting labels on DVDs because they can heat up and cause problems. Are they referring to DVD-RW while reburning? DVDs don't tend to heat up in my DVD player? Maybe I'm confused on this one.
2. Is there a difference between the quality of Bulk & Retail media? I bought a OptoDisc retail packed individual DVD-RW for $5.99 here in Canada because I was desparate for a blank before my shipment comes in from Rima. I'd heard bad things from everyone here but the disc seemed to be good quality and played start to end without a problem in my Panasonic RV-62.
Thanks,
Greg

Yes there is a big difference between Bulk media and Retail media like Pioneer or Apple or Verbatim.
But there is also a big difference between the different bulk/generic media manufacturers.
Of the generic media, Ritek seems to be the best you can get..
Optodisc and Princo and Bulkpaq have had spotty reputations after many complaints on here over the past year or so. Though a few users haven't had problems with one or all three of those generics.
I stick to Ritek G03's or G04's...they are cheap (79 cents) in packs of 100 yet they're pretty good quality as far as I can tell. Who knows maybe in a few years they'll stop working!
So far I got some that are a year old and still going strong. I've only had my burner that long.

Well I ordered 100 Riteks from advice on the forum but they haven't shown up yet so being eager to use my burner I've been using the Optodisc retail singles (only disc I can find <$10 apiece Canadian).
My question about retail/bulk was really same manufacturer, ie. Retail Optodisc vs. Bulk Optodisc? Better discs go into retail pack than spindles?
So far everything I've burnt has played perfectly (6 burns, Pioneer 2XRW,Pioneer 4XR and the other Optodisc 1X-RW), I guess I'm lucky. They work in my Panasonic 62, and my PS2.
Thanks

Personally I doub't there's much difference between "retail/bulk" for the same maunfacurer.
In princo's case their retail discs are worse than their bulk discs.
But you never know.

I have Ritek G03, and Ritek G04 discs in stock.
email me david2k@orcon.net.nz for prices and shipping information. (shipping from New Zealand should be a lot cheaper than from the states).

Anyone know if the G04's will burn at 2X reliably on a Toshiba 5002? How much are they per disc?

Demi9OD you don't need the G04 to burn reliably at 2x speed on the toshiba SD-r5002, as the G03's write very well at 2x speed right out of the box (no need for firmware update etc).
PS. when I droped a G04 in my 5002 it refused the disc (I'm still using factory shiped firmware).
Edit, please ignore my comment about about ritek 2x burn speed, I didn't realise you had already tried that option.
You could always get taiyo yuden 2x certified DVD-R discs. I can try one out in my toshiba for you in a couple of days.
