Benchmark on a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading: HELP

Hello guys, just stopped by to say that I will do a Benchmark (a complete review) of the famouse Pentium 4 - 3.06 Ghz with Hyperthreading and comparisons between other processors with and without Hyperthreading encoding DivX 5.02 and XviD (lastest Koepi's Release with B-Frames)

In case anyone want to see it It will be posted on www.maximopc.org (spanish hardware site) the place I work for.


I would LOVE to receive any help from you, optimizations, custom settings for the Pentium 4, etc...

If I don't receive any hint, I will use the default programs.

VirtualDubMOD (with YV12), avisynth 2.50 Alpha, GordianKnot, Divx 5.02 , XviD lastest koepi's build. and a set of predefined settings for XviD and DivX.

Well, I posted this message since i would really apreciate some help, frankly speaking, I have to give this Pentium 4 3.06Ghz Back in 1 week so I do not have the time I would like to test the codecs the way I like, so, YOUR help is really important.

I did some preliminary testing which indicates that codecs do really scale well with more speed, (specially DivX 5 which hits more than 80 fps on the second pass sometimes).


After this weeks P4 return I will have an Athlon XP 2600+ machine full with KT400 and DDR400 memory.

I think this kinds of machines are not readly available to everyone and it should be cool to have some preliminary testing to see what kind of speed are we talking about, what optimizations can be made.

Well, I think you guys got the picture, if anyone would like to help, I would really apreciate.

All tests was done with Xvid and Divx Pro 5.03, with Hyperthreading and Without Hyperthreading, hope you like it.

@NRG: chill out man, the benchmarks are what matter, and you can read those no matter what language the article is in. Sheesh!

@EagleDM: thanks for the benchmarks, I was wondering if HT would speed up DivX encoding, and your results are very encouraging.

Why is XVID decoding/encoding WAY slower than DIVX 5.03? also.. it seems that DIVX does benefit from HT and XVID doesn't!!

Impressive benchmarks. I figured HT was going to pan out to be a lot of hot air. I still can't afford one but it's nice to see someone getting numbers like that. :)

I'm curious how you got that avs to work under avisynth 2.50. You crop on odd numbers and the avisynth I've been using doesn't allow that.

His numbers might be better under DivX 5.03 because he limited the quantizers and used chroma motion in XviD and used GMC in DivX. The XviD encode undoubtedly looks a lot better ;)

I tried to disable chroma motion for Xvid but the improvement is not 'so good' as you may like, just 1 fps more.


the Avisynth that i used is 2.50 ALPHA, the BETA release does not allow me to do that kind of croping, you're right on that.



if you like I can make an english Review just for you guys, maybe if doom9 agree with me, i can post the benchs on his page also. what do you think?

Also, who was the guy who said that xvid does not benefict from Hyperthreading? just look at the graphs, xvid gain A LOT by enabling HT, it is just that is slower than divx, that's all, but DOES benefict from it.

Just look at the graphs again.
