what's the best way to get an mpeg2 file into premier?

do i need to create an intermediate .avi file or can i go straight into premier with my .avs?

either way, what's the best way (or what's the best script) to make my video file completely compatible with premier (video and audio)?

or do i need any other programs/utils?
