a DVD9 will be exactly 2x DVD5 (which has been mentioned a few times in other threads).
but if you stay under 9,400,000,000 bytes, you'll be safe.

A DVD-9 is not a dual sided DVD (that's DVD-10), but a dual layer. The single layer holds 4,700,000,000 bytes (4.37GB) and the inner layer can hold 3,840,000,000 bytes. Therefore:
DVD-5 (single side, single layer) 4,700,000,000
DVD-9 (single side, dual layer) 8,540,000,000
DVD-10 (dual side, single layer) 9,400,000,000
DVD-14 (a single layer on one side, dual on the other) 13,240,000,000
DVD-18 (dual sided, dual layer) 17,080,000,000

eerrrrrrr....are u talkin about double sided dvd-5's cause dvd-9's do not exist...well for us that is... You can't burn dvd9 yourself, but you can still author and create DLT-tapes of the first and second layer of a dvd9.
There are two options for the Track Path: parallel and opposite. The player starts reading the first layer from the inside out and switches to the second layer. If it's parallel, the player will go to the center and will read the second layer from the inside out. If it's opposite, the player will read the second layer from the outside towards the center. The advantage of the latter is that the laser does not have to move from the outside to the inside when switching layers -> shorter switching time. The problem with this 'opposite track path' is that the second layer cannot exceed the capacity of the first layer.
Another thing is that pc-files (software added to your dvd-video) must fit on the first layer (Scenarist-constraint).
Does anyone know if it's possible to master a dvd9 on 2xdvdr (one for each layer) instead of DLT?

thx again

check with your specific manuf. for this, you can get 2 image files ready to write to 2 DLT's out of scen and maestro, but as for burning it to DVD-R's instead, it all depends on if the replicator can (or wants) to do it that way.

seems i was wrong about the dual layer size, oh well
