View Full Version : GN Files Both too big after Split...???

I encoded Spiderman using GN for a 2CD encoding with AC3 sound.

The File size was 1432964 KB. If split perfectly on center this would just fit.

Problem is that when I used Nandub to split I get two files:

File 1 is 717950 KB
File 2 is 717068 KB

CD 700 MB only holds 716800 KB

The only way I can fit this encoding on two CD's is to trim off some of the credits to gain the space back that is needed. It seems that when splitting Nandub has a little overhead that I somehow did not account for when I used GN.

Not a big deal I can just cut off some of the credits but I am trying to learn how to use this software correctly and I must not have set something right.

Thanks for your help

My 700MB CDs hold 702MB easily, with no overburn; simple burning with Nero will fit them. So if you're 1-2MB over it's okay. Why not re-encode the credits 1-2MB smaller, and make your center cut 1-2MB earlier. This way you don't lose any quality and/or parts of the movie (even though the credits are usually not watched, I keep them for the 'complete' package).

Also, make sure you're consistent with your overhead settings, from GKnot to Nandub (or use VirtualDubMod for splitting, more practical than Nandub). If you only calculate for an interleave of 2 frames in GKnot, and interleave only 1 frame, you will be oversized.

Hi-

Or under Total File Size in GKnot, you could change it to 1390 MB from 1400 MB to give yourself more leeway in deciding where to split.

But as OvERaCiD23 said, the file sizes you gave can be easily burned without overburning.

Thanks

I think now I finally understand. I did not realize that the total file size could be changed without causing problems.

Just so I learn I will try all of your methods. I am still new at this so this will help me in the long run and who knows maybe i will be able to help others at some point.

If you only calculate for an interleave of 2 frames in GKnot, and interleave only 1 frame, you will be oversized.

Not sure where this is set I guess I must be using defaults. I can see how interleaving more often than used for calculation would use more space than calculated. How do I check these settings. Also what is recommended for interleave?

Guess I should have just tried to burn the files I did not know one could slightly excedd the 700 good to know. Yea I like the credits for completeness mkaes me feel more like I went to the movies..

In Gknot, the audio interleaving default is 2 frames. You can find this on the "Audio 1" and optionally the "Audio 2" tabs when encoding jobs.

If you're manually interleaving in Nandub, the interleaving default is 1 frame. It's set in the "Audio....Interleaving" and optionally the "Audio...Secondary Stream...Interleaving" menus.

Hakko would likely say that with the advent of VirtualDubMod, you can do your muxing with this new tool, and that it is better than Nandub. I haven't used it, so can't comment.

I agree with manono
When i encode ,instead of going right to the 700MB limit.. i will use 695MB setting instead...this allows some room for error..and also makes it easier to split the files.
So far I have never had a movie come out higher than 700mb.. its usually right on the nose where i set it.. somewhere between 695MB and 700MB

I tried a few now with the 695 setting and I agree. In general GK fits exactly with the 700 setting But when I did a movie with subtitles it went a little over. With the 695 setting it was perfect.
