It took me a while, but I've learned all the basics (and some advanced) steps to consistantly backup dvds. Lately I've been reading about multiple PCG movies and extras and the easiest way seems to be with jdobbs method using ifoupdate and maestro. I have learned how to create playlists and play around with PGC's with the Signs DVD (2 PGC main movie).

I am trying to reencode the extras on the Reservoir Dogs dvd. This is what ifoupdate tells me to do with the chapters:

Chapter assignment information for DVDMaestro Playlists:
- Playlist #1 (PGC #1); [VOB Sector: 0]
- 00:00:00:00
- Playlist #6 (PGC #6); [VOB Sector: 0]
- This Playlist uses the chapter point(s) identified in Playlist #1
- Warning: The chapter count isn't the same. You may want to look at this with IFOEdit
- Playlist #2 (PGC #2); [VOB Sector: 69141]
- 00:04:39:24
- Playlist #3 (PGC #3); [VOB Sector: 111410]
- 00:07:37:11
- Playlist #4 (PGC #4); [VOB Sector: 149703]
- 00:10:09:03
- Playlist #5 (PGC #5); [VOB Sector: 164100]
- 00:11:08:15
- Playlist #7 (PGC #7); [VOB Sector: 185001]
- 00:12:30:08
- Playlist #13 (PGC #13); [VOB Sector: 185001]
- This Playlist uses the chapter point(s) identified in Playlist #7
- Warning: The chapter count isn't the same. You may want to look at this with IFOEdit
- Playlist #8 (PGC #8); [VOB Sector: 287245]
- 00:19:24:09
- Playlist #9 (PGC #9); [VOB Sector: 384409]
- 00:26:14:04
- Playlist #10 (PGC #10); [VOB Sector: 556007]
- 00:37:30:06
- Playlist #11 (PGC #11); [VOB Sector: 646582]
- 00:43:38:17
- Playlist #12 (PGC #12); [VOB Sector: 779023]
- 00:52:46:03
Any unlisted PGCs have been determined to be nulls (dummys)
and will remain intact in the original file.

All PGC's except 6 and 13 have only on chapter point. The problem I am having is with PGC's 6 and 13. As you can see, ifoupdate doesn't tell me what chapter points to put in PGC's 6 and 13.

I have seen problem in the forums, but I didn't see an answer to it. My question is what chapter points should I include in the playlists for PGC's 6 and 13? How much does this complicate the process?

Side Note: PGC 6 has 5 chapter points and PGC 13 has 6 chapter points.

What version of IFOUpdate did you use, was it 062? Also can you let us know what mode, was it multi pgc or adjusted.

Looking at the information on your VOB I would guess that you need to use the adjusted mode. You said that you created playlists so I assume that you tried the multi pgc method.

Follow the normal method of ripping the VOB, View with IFOUpdate 062 and use the adjusted cells mode and save chapters, DVD2AVI, Avisynth, CCE, and reload the movie and AC3 file into Maestro. Insert *.chp file you saved from IFOUpdate and compile the movie. You do not need to create playlists.

Place your reauthored VOBs into the original rip and re-run IFOUpdate to update the IFO and correct the VTS sectors.

Try it and let us know if it works.

I was using ifoupdate 057 in maestro multi-PGC mode. I'll try your suggestion and post. But how does ifoupdate make it to where I don't have to re-create the multiple pgc's? Does it rewrite the ifo file?

Thanks

It seems to compare the authored IFO from Maestro to the original IFO and make corrections accordingly.

Playlist = PGC. Each Playlist you create in Maestro will be turned into a separate PGC when you compile what you've done authoring-wise.

You're not changing anything per se when reauthoring with this method from what I can see, you're emulating the original, just with a new video stream for compression.

When using the ‘adjusted’ mode you do not need to create playlists.

After you have reauthored in Maestro, you will have one PGC. When you run IFOUpdate it will analyse which chapters relate to which PGC in the original IFO and create your new IFO with a set of new PGCs from the chapters that you entered in Maestro.

The ‘adjusted’ mode only needs to be used when cells relate to one or more PGCs.

It may be easier for you to read the attached thread on IFOUpdate as the discussion and graphic illustration will make the way that the new ‘adjusted’ mode works easier to understand.

Hope this helps.

@ Tony140,

Please post your reply to let me know whether the ‘adjusted’ method worked on your backup.

Cheers

Thanks for all the help. I will give it a try and post if I still have problems.
