To be frank; I got tired of all the emails I got from people with hotmail accounts asking stupid questions and saying they never got this email and that email so I just cut it off at the source.
I am going to slowly phase out free email providors because they give me nothing but grief!
That's not a valid reason !
@Doom9, If you think that not allowing free e-mail accounts is logical what more can i say.

Until you sit on the receiving end of these problems you are not qualified to judge. It's a free world, if you're not happy with this board by all means look for another one.

I have to agree, I had so much trouble with email on my site I got rid of it altogether. Not only do free email providers filter and bounce a lot of email, so do cable providers like Bellsouth.

To maybe point this out a little better: Email provider who filter out email sent by this board automatically and do not let the user decide about this will get on the shitlist when we find out about this. We were getting dozens of emails every day from people using hotmails accounts who signed up on this board and never got their activation email. At first we started resending those emails only to find out that they once again would not arrive at their destination. Clearly this is unacceptable as it means everybody signing up with a hotmail account requires that we manually activate his/her account, which is a lot of additional work for a job we do in our freetime and do not get paid for. As far as I know (kaizen is handling board account issues) hotmail is the only email provider that is on the shit list at the moment. Now there's no need to complain or anything because the decision has been made a long time ago and it will not be reversed. We won't load a lot of extra work on our shoulders just because your email provider has a crappy spam filter, that is your problem, not ours.
Account holders who used a hotmail account to sign up will have to change their email address (other freemail services are still possible and won't be disallowed unless they start the same behaviour as hotmail is exhibiting) if (and only if) they want to make any changes to their account. As long as you don't change your profile you won't have any problems even if a hotmail email account is in your profile.
So once again: email providers who bounce emails sent via this board will find their way on the shit list because they create a lot of extra work for us. It's not about freemail or not, it's about creating extra work for us or not.

 I'm using hotmail and i never got any problems. It's the user’s responsibility to set the spam filters correctly.
Since i believe the problem is caused by lame users which set the spam filter, to filter out everything that it's not in their e-mail list, i don't think that you are dealing correctly with the problem rather you use the lazy solution.
Since it's your site you can do whatever you want with it but at least accept the criticism which is not meant to offend anyone.
I don’t have anything else to write in this post I’m glad that no other e-mail providers are not in the shitlist.

first you call us lazy and then you say you don't want to offend anyone? Well, I DO take offense because what you're doing is negative and destructive criticism, nothing constructive.
If I would trust you I'd make you an admin and let you deal with all the boring and tedious things that come along every day. Only when it hurts will most people start to open their eyes.

One action doesn't make you lazy. Every user in the board knows the amount of work that your team does and Appreciate the result which is very good.
But a better solution could be found than forcing all the hotmail users to create a new e-mail account in order to use your forum.
After all if people can't set up their e-mail spam filter correctly and complain that it's not their fault, they shouldn't allowed to register in the forum, if say the activation e-mail failed to get to them more than 3 times.
[EDIT]

Well critism doesn't mean pointing out only the good things but also pointing out the bad things.

that means manually resending it twice... say it takes you one minute to do that, times two, and then that times the number of new users signing up (averaged since this board started that makes 1500 new accounts a month). Let's say 10% of those are hotmail users which makes 150x2 = 300 minutes = 5h per months wasted thanks to hotmail. If you pay kaizen 100$ an hour then I'm sure he'll do it, but not for free.
Anyway, this discussion is pointless, you're simply not catching my drift. You think we can invest time and time just because somebody wants to use a certain email provider? You can expect such treatment as a paying customer. But, we don't sell a service, hence you get what you get. There's a saying in my country that goes something like this: You don't look into a horse's mouth when you get the horse for free.

Honestly, I emailed Kaizen too with the same problem. I never had any trouble with hotmail either, never got my Doom9 notifcations trashed so I was also legitimately (??? not sure anout this one) wondering where this "radical" decision came from.
I call myself a lazy guy and I sure will not like to have to look for another free provider... But hey, that's life, isn't it ?
The only thing I find rather "strange" is that I can still receive my forum notifocations on my hotmail account, no prob, I could create an avatar, no prob, but I can't create a signature... Very weird, but I don't want to bother with this small issue anyway (ooops, seems I just did...sorry) :D
Any advice on a good free email provider ?

Is Kaizen even in the picture anymore? He hasn't made a post in almost half a year. Perhaps he's working in the background?
