Peoples,

I have been overestimating the length of movies I backup using DVD2SVCD because the "Movie Length" value under the "Conversion" tab seems to be overestimating the movie runtime. For example, I just backed up Disney's Pocahontas which has a running time of 81 minutes. My problem is that the movie length value returned by DVD2SVCD shows 1:35:29, or about 95 minutes. I have verified that the movie is infact 81 minutes in length, and used that value for encoding. The encode turned out perfectly. I can't say the same for the last few movies I backed up which turned up a few hundred megs short due to over estimation using the time reported by DVD2SVCD.

Can anyone clarify what DVD2SVCD is actually reporting in these cases?

Thanks,
Hacksaw.

Hm..interesting indeed.
I have seen 2 different movie lengths in the drop down box. They differ only by a few seconds not like 14 minutes. I'm not really sure what could be causing this. I'll take a close look when I get to do my next rip.

The time DVD2SVCD shows is taken directly from the IFO file. So the fault lies directly with the studio that authored the DVD. This is not an uncommon problem and it is defintely worth checking the actual length in WinDVD or PowerDVD before encoding.

The time used for encoding is an actual taken from the VOB's and has nothing to do with the time shown. Check the actual used bitrates and I am sure they will be what is correct for the real time of the movie.

If you read the Q+A you will see the exact steps taken to find the time.
