View Full Version : SVCD plays fine on PC not on DVD player

Hi,

I've just started with the wonders of SVCD so I'm probably doing something stupid so apologies in advance if I am.

I've ripped one chapter of a DVD and encoded into mpeg2 using DVDx 2.0 & the helpful 'DVDx Only Guide' (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdx-main.htm). I can play back the mpeg from my harddrive fine.

I then burn it to a CD-R using Nero 5.5 as an SVCD (I just drag the mpeg file into the MPEG folder & burn) & again can play this fine in PowerDVD.

When I play the CD-R on my standalone DVD player (a panasonic SCDM3) the sound & picture is incrediably choppy & slow running at about 1 fps.

The DVD player is able to play SVCDs (checked at www.vcdhelp.com) & so I'm at a loss. Any ideas gratefully received.

Cheers in advance.

Sorry just noticed I posted to the wrong forum. I'm still interested in a reply but will post elsewhere - unable to delete the original!

My advice is you try DVD2SVCD to rip a chapter and encode it to SVCD, let's say at a Constant Bitrate (CBR)of 2400, plus audio. Being automated, there is no risk of errors during the process, and you'll get a valid SVCD bin/cue file that you can burn to a CD-RW and test on your standalone player.

This is a good starting point to see if your player really supports SVCD. Check the DVD2SVCD guides if you never used it before, it is quite straightforward.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply Waldok. I'll look into DVD2SVCD again but I've previously been put off by the cost of CCE/TMPG ($2000+ if I remember correctly for CCE).

Still you cans use the demo CCE version, it will of course include the CCE logo in the final video stream, but it will still allow you to check that your standalone plays SVCD well.

Just a thought.
You do not seem to be using Nero's SVCD function correctly.

Instead of dragging the mpeg file into the MPEG2 folder of the SVCD, drag it to the Tracks window underneath.

Otherwise you do not end up with a standard compliant disc.

Stick the CDR you have already burned in your PC and browse thru the contents. If the mpeg file in the MPEG2 folder is not called AVSEQ01.mpg then that would explain a heck of a lot!

I just noticed that you say Nero 5.5, but you don't say which 5.5 version. Older versions had issues with SVCD creation.
Make sure you are using the latest version which currently is 5.5.10.0.

Like Nick said don't drag it into a directory. Drag the file into the big area on the lower left hand side.

I will move this since it is in the wrong forum.

Thanks for all the replies. I eventually contacted Panasonic to double check that my DVD player could cope with SVCDs & found out that it could not. Vcdhelp have been advised. Looks like I'm stuck with VCD.
