I have been doing some new experimenting in DVD burning, and I was using TDK and Maxel DVD -R media. Always I was able to burn at 2X. Movies turned out great. I came across a 10 pack of DVD -R made by Khypermedia selling for $14.00 Seemed good to me! Of the few I've tested, none burn any faster than 1X. I have a 4X Pioneer A105 burner. Movies seem to have dificulties in the latter part of the movies with skips and freezes, and sometimes completely unreadable.
Is this actually the media (made in Taiwan)?? Also, now I wonder when i read posts on those that are having troubles later on in the movie of things going wierd.. is it them, or is it the MEDIA that is giving them fits? Food for thought. As for me, I'm going back to TDK and Maxell, no more "bargains" no bargain taking 2 hours to burn a DVD and then have it turn out 'maybe' quality video.

Yes it's poor quality media that is causing your problems. I doubt Khypermedia actually manufacturer the discs, so if you could post the manufacturer id we'd be able to determine the true manufacturer.
PS 1x writing only takes 1 hour for a full 4.7GB disc, so if your's took 2 hours you must be having some majoy buffer under-run errors, which could be contributing to the skips etc.

The little numbers inside of the center of the K Hypermedia discs is GC604GG17175382 6 there is an email for them at services@khypermedia.com
When you look at what looks like to be a bargin in price, is it really? If you have to burn 3 to get one good one, then consider the wear and tear on your DVD burner, your processor, and you paitience as well. What looks like a bargain at $1.49 turned out to be the most expensive DVD's I've ever bought, and I would do well to break the remainder in half and pitch them and go buy new... quality. Momma always said you won't ever go wrong spending your money on quality.
BTW I burned with Nero and if I choose UDF/IFO instead of UDF the resultant DVD won't be recognized in a set top DVD player. Has a hard time with Power DVD as well. If I try to burn as a DVD video that creates both the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folder, then Nero doesnt' like the complilation and won't burn it.. as a rule. Will have to fiddle some more with Nero...hmmmm didn't he fiddle when Rome burned??? FIREBUG!! LOL

The inner ring markings means very little to me.
To tell the manufacturer id do the following.
1) Download DVD decrypter from www.doom9.org
2) Insert a blank DVD-R into your recorder.
3) Run dvd decrypter.
4) Select mode>iso>write
5) On the right hand side block you should see the following:
Pre-recorded Information:
Manufacturer ID: RITEKG03
Please reply with the manufacturer id of your discs.

Ok. I have DVD Decrypter and looked at the media. Shows : CMC00RG200 and the linear density is 0.267um track density is 0.746 um.
Now I know what info you are looking for. This will be helpful to anyone who happens to read this post as well. :)

Intersting. Same movie I ripped, at the same location and same files, burned on Nero same way (UDF) but on a Maxell DVD -RW and movie plays fine front to back no skips or jerks. a couple in the movie, but they were part of the movie...actors actually.. *grin*

Yah thats CMC media. Oddly enough in the Pioneer Compatibility 2x list(yet on my record attempts only at 1x speed), they are mentioned, but I've had the mis-fortune of buying a couple for experiments, and noticed that they will only play smoothly and jitter free on a computer. All the standalone players (tested on 5 different brands), will jitter in the same sector of the disc. It seems my DVD-Rom and my burner can play it back no problem. This tends to happen near the end of the disc. I got a small 5-pack from a distro center in Vancouver, that said they were 2x. After I emailed them back, telling my resutls, they stopped selling them at advertised 2x for A05 burners.

I found some Ritek 4X DVD -R media for not that bad of a price, but not great, which, may indicate it being good. $3.00 each for a pack of 10 it seems like a lot more to spend, but I've learend, and I HOPE to pass along to new users, don't buy a good DVD burner, use great software for your ripping and encoding, etc, then cheapen or compromise your results by using little bird special DVD's.....cheap cheap, cheap.
I just wondered if anyone had any experience or knowledge about Ritek? From my observations, TDK is GREAT and so is Maxell.

I just bought a 25 pack of Ritek dvd-r, and for backup they work great. But they don't seem to all be recognized by any of my standalone players.
So, my solution. Buy a bunch of them for back up, and keep using the maxell for the dvds I want to watch on my standalones.

The Ritek 4x have worked flawlessly on my Pioneer A05 burner. Besides enjoying comfortable 15min burning speeds, i also enjoy the luxury of all videos i make work 100% on all standalone players i have tested (so far over 5), including a PS2. The only downside I see, is importing these things in Canada are very costly.

Vernon,
I've had very good results using Ritek G03's. They have played in every standalone player I've tried. which is a Sony, Pioneer, Apex and Oritron. Oh I forgot, they also played on a Daewoo

In the C'T media test, the CMC discs had the highest error rate of all (a Pi sum 8 of 1600, while 280 is allowed and good discs show below 100). No idea why this crap is supported for 2x writing.

I can tell you right now, from my own experience, the CMC disc will NOT burn at 2x Never have in a Pioneer DVR-105 4X burner using latest Nero 5.5.10.0 software.
Is there a piece of software that will tell me the version number of my Pioneer (CenDyne) burner? It shows up as a Pioneer, and it also shows up in Pioneer's web site as a DVR-105 model, similar to the A105 model. Bought it new for $167.00. Burns great with good media.
Also noted that "Shrek" movie we have is UDF format. When I burn DVDs using some guides that say to use UDF/IFO I get a disc that is not recognized by my set top or other dvd players. If I just choose UDF and create a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder and move the .vob, .bup, .ifo file into there (when I'm done monkeying around with them), then the created DVD plays alright in set top Apex or Toshiba DVD players.. that is as long as I don't use CMC media!!!
If you have the CMC media, this is probably the best course of action to make it right.
hold disk so that burn side is faccing you.. (purplish looking side)
Take magic marker and write on this surface "THIS MEDIA SUCKS!"
then you can use a scribe to write your initials near the center.
There.. all better.. from these disc now you will never loose any files or important information. This must be done on NEW discs before attempting to use them. These can now be shared with your friends, used as frisbees, glue string on them and make a mobile.. all sorts of neat things. Oh..just don't try to use them for writing DVD information as they are NG.. NO GOOD.. POS. little bird special... cheap cheap cheap!!!
Just my opinion, for what it's worth.;)

Hello my friends,
I have a great problem with A05..
First of all I have the last firmware update.
Disks written flawlessly are olny VERBATIM,MAXELL,PIONEER,TAYO YUDEN..
DISKS TOTTALY FAILED.. SMART BYU,PRINCO...
In the princo their id was tkd's...
but the data written could not be written after a position,
and looking at the dvd it seemed not burned after a position.
Some time ago i had burned same disks with A03
with the same id at (1x of course)
and up to now i had no problems...
I AM DESPERATE..
Could it be nero??
Should i wait for afirmware??
Should i change the drive??

Due to Princo's faking of TDK codes, Pioneer does not support Princo any longer (someone on brennmeister had the same problem as you and contacted pioneer support).
The ones you have mentioned to work well are all quality discs.

If you take a look at the drive info in DVD Decryptor under the burn menus, it also shows the firmware revision of your drive, yes.
