New to Capturing, Vdub vcr timer?

Like the topic suggest I am new to the capturing world. My main reason of posting is to ask if there is some kind of timer plug-in, or app that works in conjuction with vdub? Where I can set a time to start recording when I am not home.

Other things I wanted to ask; Tips, usefull appz, irc channels and site that anyone would suggest besides almightydoom9?

If you don't mind shelling out $50 ShowShifter is a no-hassle way to turn your PC into a digital VCR. I use it to record my TV shows for daily viewing and to save to CD. I record to Divx5 at 640x480 and the quality is good, but you need a fairly fast system (or an average new system) to avoid dropping frames during fast motion scenes (Divx Pro deinterlacing set to all frames interlaced; qpel, GMC, bidirectional off; 3-5kbps; P2100).

I used to use the timer version of VirtualDub and that worked fine for a while when I wanted to record shows that I wanted to save. You're lucky starting out now. Back in the good old days (a few years ago) my first recording of a 2 hour movie took 2 days for my creaky old PC to reencode and nowadays with faster PCs and software like GKnot and ShowShifter it's just too easy.

Here is a simple little program that does work with VCDEasy, the main fault I have with it is it doesn't allow for channel changing (or if it does I haven't found it yet.)

The way I ended up using it was to start VCDEasy in capture mode, change to the proper channel, do not start the capture, but leave it open and on in the capture mode. Then VDStart Pro will start and stop the capture at the appropriate time.


In my opinion www.vcdhelp.com has a whole lot more capture, encoding and burning info than doom 9.

By the way: all you need is to download the VirtualDub 1.4.9.2 VCR + SYNC program; it's in English, although the site is German.
