OS XP Pro
Gordian Knot 0.23b

I've 4 PCs [ABCD] A & B have DVD drives, C is fastest but has limited disk space, D is my desktop.

I usually rip on A or B and then run gKnot on either A,B or C. Sometimes I'll use D for trailers and the like. I run VNC on all PCs so I can run remote apps from window on desktop PC.

Problem: dvd2avi runs fastest if run on PC with vobs on local hard disk. I'd like to run dvd2avi on A or B only and then use the d2v file created (or avs if neccessary) from C. Unfortunately I get a error 'mpeg2source cannot open xxx.d2v' if I try this.

I have edited the d2v and avs files to reflect the drive mappings I want but I'm missing something. If I create a d2v AND avs file on A or B using C I can edit the d2v & avs files so that I can open the avs file on D; using same or different drive mapping letter; but if the d2v and avs files are created on A or B then they can only be used on the PC they were created on.

While typing this I've been tinking & testing futher :)
PC-A uses structure
d:\movie1\movie1.vob
d:\movie2\movie2.vob

If on PC-C I map D: to \\PC-A\D I can open \movie1\movie1.avs and [saints be praised] \movie1\movie1.d2v -- obviously I now have a solution to my problem but I'd still like to know what I should edit if drive remapping is not an option.

Open the .d2v file in a text editor. the first lines should be paths to the vobs you want to access. Change these so instead of "d:\path" they read "\\PC-A\path"

You should really try the new NET features of VirtualDubMod (http://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualdubmod). They only work for one-pass encodings (ATM), but it may be an impressive display of computing efficiency.

hakko504 I just tried your suggestion and I get 'File is not a valid dvd2avi project (v1.76, YUV2)!' error when I attempt within gKnot to open a d2v file which was created on PC-B using PC-D

since my original post I've managed to remap PC-As 2nd disk to drive letter O:, network mapped PC-C and PC-D to use \\PC-A\O as O:\ - I can now run d2a locally on PC-A and open the d2v file on either PC-C or PC-D.

Alas, never happy eh! I cannot usefully create the avs file on PC-D and run vob>avi part on PC-C, gKnot keeps the resolution, bitrate and audio params elsewhere [the gks file perhaps]. Realistically VNC is usually more than up to the job of letting me create the avs file on a remote PC.

to transfer gknot settings from on pc to another, just save a slot to a *.gks (gknot settings) file, then load this file with gknot on the other pc.

thanks TheWEF for the tip, it's a very convenient way of transferring video settings from desktop to remote PCs .. but you already knew that :)
