first let me say that i am basically a n00b at building xeon systems. The PCI-X and extened atx were completely different than what im used to working with. small athlon systems.
Well heres the beast:
case: Lian-Li PC70
sound card: Soundblaster audigy2 platinum
video editing card: DvStorm2 plus
3d card: Quadro4 980xgl
IDE HDDS: 2 120gig western digital w/ 8mb cache
1 40gig western digital w/ 8mb cache
SCSI HDDS: 2 73.4 gb ST373307LW
SCSI Raid: Adaptec 2010S zcr u320 raid card (running r0)
dvd-r: pioneer a05u
cd-r: liteon 48x
memory: 2 1024 mb ddr266 ECC
Motherboard: x5da8 by supermicro
CPU: Dual 2.8ghz xeons w/ 533fsb
Card reader: Internal 6:1 card reader
now, my first question is. I accidently got too many harddrives, theres obviously nothing i can do about it, so im wondering, should i keep the 40 and the 120? or 2 120s?
I was going to run windows on the 40 alone and have it be a boot drive.
Second, Windows refuses to install. It says, and i quote, "An unexpected error (522225) occured at line 5152 in d:\xpspi\base\boot\setup\setup.c"
then it said something about raw disks, but how do i format to ntfs without xp? i cant find a boot disk that will format to ntfs.
Third, in the bios, it shows that my cpus are only 1ghz instead of 2.8.
hopefully someone can help me so i can use this :-D

then it said something about raw disks, but how do i format to ntfs without xp? Partition Magic can do it (preferably V.7 or better). All you need is a bootable CD (DOS/Win95/98) with the DOS-part of PQmagic on it - you can start it from CD (at least V7 does start from CD) and then you can format and partition your drives to almost any possible file system and cluster size.

Just had another idea about this error:
It says, and i quote, "An unexpected error (522225) occured at line 5152 in d:\xpspi\base\boot\setup\setup.c"
I think I had this error with a Win2k installation once when I tried to load SCSI and IDE-RAID drivers from CD. I finally found that adapter drivers for SCSI and IDE can only be loaded from diskette and nothing else.
I was surprised recently to find out that WinXP Pro SP1 still needs driver diskettes for loading additional HD-adapters (very futuristic, isn't it? ;))

yeah, haha
ive tried everything to format and partition the harddrives, it must be something within my motherboard, because i cannot write to the disks!!!!!!
for some reason it keeps giving me an error about writing to the harddrives, even though the bios recognizes them. So there MUST be a jumper or something that im missing that turns on/off boot disk write protect. Atleast thats my theory. I went into bios and write protect is turned off, so i guess its a jumper. Or maybe not. WHO KNOWS :)
anyone else have a problem where they cant write to their harddrives though?
or anyone have an x5da8 mainboard?
thanx

1.You might have some CPU overheating/memory problems,
check whether heatsinks are installed correctly, and
replace the memory with another pair if possible.
2.Clear the CMOS>Locate JBT1 contact pads on your mobo
end short it with a screwdriver (remove power cord first)
3.Locate jumper #39, move it to position 1-2(Auto FSB Selector)
4.Enter your bios Advanced>Advanced Processor Options>frequency Ratio
Check what is the multiplier value specified there. (Post it here please)
5.Download This (http://www.redzone.co.il/vad/bin/DM_9.50.zip) little tool; put it on bootable CD/diskette, launch the main program
:\DM.EXE /X ,IMPORTANT without the /X command argument the program will fail to identify any of your HD's.
Edit:The prog is actually quantum disk manager, will work just fine with any HD's
Hope I've manage to help you somehow :)

hey, thanx for taking the time to post! ok, here we go:
first off, how about a bios update? would that help?
1: heres stats from my hardware monitor logic:
cpu1: 34* C (how do i change it to f???)
cpu2: 34* C
System temp 38* C
cpu fan 1: 4066
cpu fan 2: 5818
chassis fan 1: 2220
chassis fan 2: 2220
processor vcore: 1.456
3.3v standby: 3.376
3.3v vcc: 3.296
5v vcc: 4.999
12v vcc: 12.099
1.8v vcc: 1.808
-12v vcc: -12.045
cpu speed: 2.80 ghz
frequency ratio: x 21
fast string operations : enabled
compatable fpu code: disabled
split lock operations: enabled
hyper-threading technology: enabled
I think my memory is good, its what they reccomended, and its two 1024meg sticks o corsair registered ecc ddr266 memory
heres waht i have for Advanced chipset Control:
Graphics Aperture: 128megabytes
clock spectrum feature: disabled
smart device monitoring: enabled
ECC Config: ECC
ECC error type: none
serr signal control: none
usb controllers: enabled
legacy usb support: disabled
local bus ide adapter: both
um is that all that u wanted to know?
let me know and ill paste more, im desperate for this thing to work
I dont see why my computer would be overheated, i mean, i have the 2 intake fans in my pc-70 on highest, i installed the 2 optional fans in the back, i have the 2 other fans going in the back, i have 2 harddrive coolers for each of my scsis each with 2 fans and the cpus have fans too!!!! Even my psu has a fan thats sucking heat out of the computer! also the videocard ofcourse has a fan. thats too many fans!!!
2. what will clearing the cmos actually do? and as i asked before, should i update my bios?
3. I will look for the jumper for my fsb tonight, it said that 39 was by default on auto, so im guessing thats what its on, but u never know i suppose
4. 21
5. im going to use that little program right now
THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wtf, Test Results:
IDE Drive 3: BIOS is properly controlling this drive in LBA mode
IDE Drive 4: BIOS is properly controlling this drive in LBA mode
Standard Legacy controller - 1st IDE port - Master Device ATAPI
model: pioneer dvd-rw dvr-105
serial: ------------
firmware: 1.00
1st port slave
model: TDK cdrw4800b
serial: ------------
firmware: s7d5
2nd port master ata
model: wdc wd1200jb-00cra0
serial: **-************
firmware: 16.06v16
int 13 #: 80h
then it gives the cylinders and everything, tell me and ill type that
then 2nd drive is the same
whats an interrupt 13h function 08h???
it says theres devices 80h - 82h and each has a capacity of approx 8414 MB!
then theres interupt 13h function 48h
and it has devices 80h-82h and 2 have a capacity of 120034MB while one has 146813 MB
so theres 3 Int 13h devices
2 ata devices
and 2 atapi devices
could the int 13h be my scsi? if so why is there 3?
thankyuo
btw i used dlgchk from westerndigital for that

Sorry if I missed something among all these details, but did you try format (or mbrfix, or fixboot, don't remember exactly what else there is) from recovery console? Or you mean you can't boot from cd?

i just plain cannot format or partition, i tried using fdisk, but no dice

I'm not quite sure how good fdisk is for new HDD's, I'd rather use tools from XP cd.
But since you have no system, maybe this can help: http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/bootitng.html

One question in your first post was:
then it said something about raw disks, but how do i format to ntfs without xp? i cant find a boot disk that will format to ntfs.I suggested you try Partition Magic which is able to format to ntfs from DOS and which is way better than the crappy fdisk. So, why do you answer "yeah, haha" like I was proposing something really silly?
whats an interrupt 13h function 08h???
INT 13h Function 08h is the coventional INT 13h interface and returns the number of cylinders and heads of the disk, but it's limited to 8.4GB (or 1024 cylinders, 256 heads)
INT 13h function 48h is the extended INT 13h interface that returns the full number of cylinders and heads.
I guess the one 140GB device is your SCSI RAID0, the two 120GB devices are your two 120GB IDE hard disks, doesn't seem to be a problem here.
Forgive me if you have done this already (but you didn't write it, so I can't know): have you loaded all necessary adapter drivers at the beginning of the XP installation? I mean SCSI and maybe also drivers for the IDE port. It was uncommon if the IDE needed seperate drivers, but it might be possible.

I would suggest removing everything that is not necessary in this machine and just getting it going first.
Put 2 IDE drives in on one channel (1 master, 1 slave). Have your CDROM hooked up on the other channel (like a normal computer.)
Take your sound card out, if you have one. Take the SCSI drives out (just for now).
Get the config as simple as possible. Go into BIOS and load SYSTEM DEFAULT values. Set the boot device to the CDROM drive. Boot from the WINDOWS CD.
See if you can load windows. If successful, then start adding in the components you took out one by one.
Good luck!
