Yes I did. Lately I've been experimenting somewhat with realvideo 9, It's a lot better than other codecs at lower bitrates. I usually use realaudio at either 64 or 96 kbits. It's not bad, but somehow on my soundcard (sb live 5.1) ogg vorbis sounds better.
And for some strange reason I can't get real audio with surround sound to work on my pc.

DLP (Dolby Pro Logic) is only 2 channels and I do not think a sound card will put out the extra channels even if it is a 5.1/6.1/7.1 card. You need something like the decoder box that comes with the Creative Labs DTT2500/3500 or Inspire 5700 speaker system or an external amplifier that has a pro-logic button.

I played around with the jm61 spec console encoder. But it's too slow to be functional.

vsoft was going to release beta 3 on the new spec some time ago but didn't.

If you have a 5.1 setup and want to maximize it, better stay away from RV9 for the moment, it only supports surround. Too restrictive, you can't mux a different audio format with its video.

You can, using a SMIL(E) :). It's an external muxing... For my 2 language rips, there is movie.rmvb, french.rm and english.rm, and 2 .smil to link the movie with the chosen language. You can use vorbis too or AC3 if you want...

Really? IIRC, Karl Lillevold said its impossible to mux AC3 with RV9 in an earlier thread. Have you muxed AC3 with RV9 successfully? How did you do it with SMIL?

Beta3 codec was not very successfull due to a lot of bugs in reference software code (we were based on it). So we decided not to release it at all.
Instead we are finishing completely new clean H.264 codec, which will be several times faster at the same quality.

don't call them dead for some months without release. AAC was drifting for years and now everyone seems to jump on it ;D

AAC is mpeg-4 and H.264 is mpeg-4 too. Mpeg seems to like slow projects :0
(of course xvid is mepg-4 too and not slow at all)

Yea, but the codec in its current form is totally useless (too slow, bad interface - configurable via a .cfg file, etc), and the development stopped almost a year ago. And it wasn't even a serious development, just an avi wrapper on the reference software.

I think VSS progressed further, but they said their codec wont be free.

their base level h.264 codec was released at the international broadcast fair a few months back. It does real-time encoding if your computer is fast enough (don't ask me about the res). Now they're working on a main level codec. Both codecs won't be free but there's hope that the base level codec might show up in a future codec comparison ;)
