Xvid artifacts on playback

I have an XviD encoded file that on playback has a lot of sumdges and spots (things drag and color spils). In vdub it plays much better, but still a bit of hazzy colors around edges of faces.. All other players yield horrible picture that repairs itself every few seconds (probably key-frames) but almost never perfect...

Gspot shows xvid for video "ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decoder", more details:

DSH 4CC XVID

640x272 resoution, 1101Kb/sec 23.976fps 1h02min..

this on win2k, cpu consumption is about 80% on playback.

Any clues how to debug this??

Download a full actual xvid binary, setup ffdshow to _not_ decode xvid, and you're done. That sounds like the qpel rounding bug in old libavcodec/ffdshow.

I opened the ffdshow config window.. unchecked XVID and pressed apply.. now I don't get any window at all during playback.. it opens for a split second, then closes.. sound continues to play..

the ffdshow version is: Jul 17 2002. libavcodec 0.4.6 build 4614 jul 17 2002.

the Xvid, I downloaded and installed says v 2.4..
it put msvcr70.dll (already had exact same file (checked with md5))
xvid.ax and xvid.dll in winnt/system32. dates are from may and june of 2002...

if I let ffdshow play the file then the color splits occurs.. looks like xvid is not installed correctly, but I uninstalled it several times, and reinstalled it.. I do see the files disappear and reapear when installing uninstalling.. anything else I can check?

when xvid is unchecked in ffdshow, gspot shows video codec to still be ffdshow MPEG-4... how can I override this??

Install the last ffdshow (ffdshow-20030103.exe) http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/
And check to use it for decoding.

I never found any problem on playback with this awesome decoder.

I installed the latest ffdshow as suggested, but still no VIDEO at all
in one player, and in another player I see vertical thin green transparent lines, like a computer circuit.. all over the picture...

tried uninstalling, reboot, reinstall, still same results...

non-xvid avis play OK on all players.. but Xvid avis either show no video window at all, or the green lines...

time to clean the registry by hand?????

basically at this point seems like xvid is not working at all...

is this your aencode or download? might be be a bad encode of some stupid release group

video file is OK, works at another location.. Eventually after many attempts I finally got it to work by deinstalling the ffdshow completely, rebooting and installing Xvid and other codecs, like divx5 .. divx3 worked all along, but I guess ffdshow has something in the handeling of xvid files...

Just my experience... I figured I'll write it here so when it happens to me again in 3 months I'll remember the solution... ;-)

Did you install the latest (unstable developper) build of XVid as Koepi advised?
Follow the link in his signature.
If the encoded movie is not broken, then it should play fine with the latest decoder you then hopefully installed... at last!

Like I said in the last post, I had to deinstall ffdshow in order for this particular video to play.. I did install the latest xvid but with any version of ffdshow, latest or older the clip would simply not play no matter what, even if I disabled in ffdshow all codecs.. after deinstalling it everything works perfect.. must be something corrupt in the registry, but I've got no time to fix it as it is now everything works, i.e. all my test clips for all the various codecs play perfect, therefor I'm happy.

i got a couple of xvid movies from the net,
on fast forward i noticed the problems that stormy said,
then i could not get these movies to play full screen,or at any resolution different from 100%, in any player,
the movies remains at their original screen size, and all around is black, or the movies plays in an angle of the black screen.

The only way to watch'em full screen is to play in virtual dub at 2x, or using a resize filter,
but also in Vdub i saw heavy spots on keyframe fast forward.

i know of other people saying this on other fora.

another thing is that if i fast forward the movie by keyframes, sometime is showed a keyframe belonging to another part of the movie.
