This is just a quick question to throw out to the group.... I output my sound via SPDIF to a Dolby Surround 2 compatible external receiver (Kenwood THX --> has played back all formats flawlessly). Most of my DIVX have the full AC3 soundtrack, but I began to experiment with Dolby Surround 2 downmix...

I found that the separation between the rear right and left channels simply isn't there when I downmix. The surround works fine, but when I play the AC3 and the DS2 MP3 downmix back... the AC3 has MUCH better separation.

Has anybody else noticed this? I even tried using Stereo instead of Joint Stereo, did not decrease the level of LFE, tried without gain and with HYBRID gain, and used Quality 0, Old Routine, Min 128 and Max 320 VBR.

Is is simply that my settings are not optimized for DS2??

Thanks!

I would like the settings with the highest possible quality, even if it takes more space. I am looking at DS2 only as an option for very large AC3 files (ie. 448 kbps in a 3 hour movie)....
