View Full Version : When to Use Multiple Video Title Sets?

When authoring a DVD, one has a number of choices about how the structure of the disk scenario is built.
I have built a number of projects with just one Video Title Set and one language, under which all the program streams exist.

The question I have is, What types of projects would benefit from using more than one VTS?
How would these scenarios be structured? Does the VTS exist per language?
Ie., if a DVD is to be released only in English, is there any reason to use more than one VTS?

Most of us who author DVDs are aware that the first program chain is what gets played when the disk is first inserted in the player. That usually has a post command that chains to a main menu or root menu. From the root, multiple possibilities exist and from what I can tell, it appears possible to do just about any kind of scenario within just one VTS. Am I missing something here as to the use of more than one VTS in a project?

Each title set (VTS) has but one video attribute. Therefore if you have titles with different attributes (such as 4:3 and 16:9) they need seperate title sets. Another reason would be purely for size, the vob files for one title set cannot exceed 9G.

The following are specified in the video attribute, if any are different they will need a different VTS:
coding method (mpeg-1 or mpeg-2)
standard (NTSC or PAL, although the entire disk must be one or the other)
aspect ratio (4:3 or 16:9)
automatic pan/scan
automatic letterbox
closed captioning
bitrate (CBR or VBR)
resolution
letterboxed (a 4:3 attribute indicating matting)
source (film or camera - affects frame rate)
