View Full Version : Subtitles are transparent

I've done alot of searching on this and haven't really found much.
I have been trying to convert the gundam wing series for some time and regardless of what I try the subtitles appear as transparent text with a gray outline. I've tried ripping the vobs with different programs. I've used different sub pallette settings. The bitmap files created are using the colors that are selected in the pallette, but when they are muxed together with the mpg file something is going wrong (maybe?). I'm not sure if this is a submux error or if the problem is with the en1-1.sub or en1-1.txt files. I have looked through the txt file and the color settings look OK. I also tried ripping and muxing the subs by hand with sub ripper and submux, and still got the same result. I can get subtitles to work fine, in any color, with anything other than gundam wing. I should also mention I've tried several gundam wing discs and several different episodes and still the same transparent text. I have also tried different versions of d2s.

Here is a portion of en1-1.txt:

@ mods:

Would this topic better suited for the subtitle forum?

Doesn't matter to me, a second opinion anyone?

Update:

Ok I was wrong before not all of the bmp files look as they should. About 12 or 15 will have the font color I chose in the palette, the rest will have the background color used for the font. This happens with every episode of gundam wing I've tried. I just tried it with the new version of d2s also. I'm guessing there is an error happening with subrip? It also happens when I try to rip the subs by hand. I am now going through wiht photoshop and editing 300 some odd subtitles to make them look as they should. I am hoping someone has something else I can try, because it will suck to have to do this for 39 different eps.

:(

OK here's the deal.

There are 6 chapters for each episode.

Chapter 1 is the opening song and has subtitle colors A.

Chapter 2 and 3 are the actual episode and is a mix of subtitle colors B and C.

Chapter 4 is the closing song and has subtitle colors A also.

Chapre 5 is the next episode sequence and is a mix of subtile colors B, C and D.

So as cce is running I rerip the subs four different times into different folders and use the same file names for each. Then I select the ones I want and copy them into the original subs folder for submux to use later. You may have to crop some of the bmp files but that's about it.

Its kind of a pain in the a**, but its not too bad.

I'm well aware of your problem, as I've dealt with this before. (Post a thread about multicolor subtitles.) Never got an answer. So what I do, is creat an srt/ssa file and have a script for the avs. This solution does not always work, if the subtitle is like in the middle of the screen. Then, I just use vobsub and create a sub file to be loaded. It's really annoying when the anime distributors decide to use multicolor or fancy subtitles in their DVDs. ADV is really bad at doing this.(Especially the really recent ones.) AnimEigo can't decide on a fluint color. It's really bothersome really, since you can't just press rip and convert in d2s and get a good rip. You have to work more.

BTW, your problem is, the very first subtitle is two colors. Green and white.

White: Gundam Wing
Green: Just wild beat communication

This causes it to pick the anti alias that surrounds the text colors. This is a problem with the tool that is used to extract the subtitles to images. (subrip?) This can't be easily fixed either. When I created the srt/ssa files, I had to choose a different color and later edit the subtitle file by adding the first line. I think there should be an option that will extract the subtitles in the same color as the original. =| Or maybe have that extra color that's missing.

My script that I add to the dvd2svcd.ini file is this:

[AVISYNTH_SimpleResize Subtitles]
0=LoadPlugin(!SimpleResize.dll)
1=LoadPlugin(!textsub.vdf)
2=textsub(!sub.srt)
3=SimpleResize(^TargetWidth,^TargetHeight)
!SimpleResize.dll=C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\Exes\DVD2SVCD\SimpleResize\SimpleResize.dll
!textsub.vdf=C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\Exes\VirtualDub\plugins\textsub.vdf
!sub.srt=C:\Documents and Settings\default\My Documents\Rips\sub.srt

I just select this, then do rip only. Convert the subtitles to srt and name it sub.srt and just put it where it's supposed to be.

It's gundam wing, it doesn't need to be bicubic. ;) I also set the # of passes to 1 for CCE. So it's just the vaf and multipass 1. Works great for me.
