I'm trying it out. I usually use AVI_IO or MMC. I capture to AVI/MJPEG. SS is another UK program and you constantly run into defaults that are PAL and not appropriate to the NTSC signals that I get. Anyway I noticed that it never asked for the framerate when I set it up, so I captured a file and checked it. Virtualdub's file info said that it was > 30fps! Each capture that I get has a different fps, so that Virtualdub will never be able to merge files, which is sometimes useful. I asked about this on the SS board and got this reply:
"The framerate does depend on which file format you are capturing to (ie. SS AVI, SSF or DShow AVI), but it is invariably controlled by the drivers for your TV capture card and your sound card.
If ShowShifter asks the capture drivers for 29.970 rate video but the drivers are delivering 30.013 (just as an example), this is what we have to capture at; otherwise frames will be dropped and added all over the place.
First try reinstalling the very latest drivers for both your TV capture card and sound card before continuing. (be warned that some users are having trouble with the latest ATI drivers)
Do please read the instructions here very carefully, as many users actually have the wrong drivers installed.
Also try recording in more than one format to see whether this affects your capture rate (ie. DShow AVI, SS AVI, SSF 1st then transcoded to AVI)."
This sounds bogus to me. The other capture programs do something to fix the fps, apparently SS doesn't. Comments?
