DVD to AVI and Premiere HELP

I would like to ask if it is possible to convert a DVD movie to an editable clip, where I can open up in Premiere and take out part of the clip.

Basically, I would like to take out certain clips from a movie and converting them to an avi or mpeg format.

I will be using Premiere 6.01 for editing the clips.

Can someone please shed some light on this? What can I use to do this? Would DVD2AVI work for this scenario?

Would it be a straight conversion? Or is this like a trial & error thing?

I am short on time, and needed this to be done in one day. The total needed clip time is about 2 mins. But the DVD movie is about 2 hours.

Titus, first, you posted this question in two places -- here and in the general discussion forum. This is called "cross-posting" and is considered a faux pas.

Second, I don't know Adobe premiere, so I don't know the formats it uses as input. If it takes .avi input, then I do have a suggested procedure:[list=1]
Using DVD Decrypter or SmartRipper, rip the individual chapter containing the scene you want.
Using DVD2AVI, select the clip from the chapter with the [ and ] buttons.
[/list=1] From this point, the process varies depending on your encoding tools. You can use DVD2AVI to create .avi output directly, though I've never used it for that purpose. DVD2AVI project files are often used as input to other encoding suites, which is how I use it. If Premiere can accept (or be made to accept) AviSynth input, then I'd probably use the .d2v project file with Gordian Knot to create the .avs script.

[Edit: I'd use .avs scripts to avoid re-encoding the MPEG-2 video stream prior to using it in Adobe's product.)

I am trying to do the samething as well. I opened the vob file and chose "save AVI". It ran very quickly (virtually instantaneous), and when done produced a zero byte file with a .wav extension. I tried differenct compression options (mpeg2, no compression, etc), but always the same results. What am I doing wrong?

Hmm. Well, I use "Save Project" instead of "Save AVI" as I use the projects (.d2v files) for frameserving with other tools. I also demux audio tracks during this step.

My guesses (and guesses only): Your video and audio settings need adjustment / changing.

You're getting a .wav file, which means that your audio is set to "decode" rather than "demux" -- but it's empty, so perhaps you've got an incorrect track selected.

Your video settings may need iDCT algorithm and color space set, also.

The following guide is an excerpt from Doom9's DivX 5 guide. This is the section on DVD2AVI. You'll find here a discussion of audio track selection (it shows demux, which will strip out the audio unchanged), as well as color space selection. I hope it helps.
